READ THIS SUMMER.  EXCEL ALL YEAR!

Please help your student stay on top of their reading development by having them read regularly over the summer.  Consider signing your student up for the Scholastic Summer Challenge at www.scholastic.com/bookfairs/record which runs from May 1 through August 21, 2010.  The goal is to record 50,000,000 minutes of reading.  Not only can students access the Challenge, they can take part in book-themed polls, games and more.

Last year’s winning school logged in 683,057 reading minutes and I am convinced that OMIS can do better than that!  Let’s take the challenge, read this summer to excel next fall!

The research done by Jimmy Kim says that students who read four or more books over the summer perform better on fall reading comprehension tests than students who read only one or no books over the summer.  I agree based on my observations of student achievement throughout the years.    Below are some suggested titles.  Students are encouraged to read at least 4 books this summer.

UPCOMING FOURTH GRADERS

S.O.R. Losers by Avi

Masterpiece by Elise Broach

Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis

How to Steal a Dog by Barbara O’Connor

Hi parents,

Welcome to the end of the year! We are winding down and getting things done. Thank you to all the parents who helped with Field Day and with the Civil Rights Field Trip. I could not have done those two activities without you! I hope you all have a wonderful summer and know that your child is ready for 5th grade and and will do fine next year. I will miss you all but make sure to say hi to me in the hallway!

Hi parents!

Thank you to all the parents who chaperoned Montgomery yesterday. It was a great field trip and we couldn’t go without people like you who help us out. So thank you Mr. Favorite, Mr. Green, Mrs. Cook, Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. Holt, and Mrs. Molz. I really appreciate you going. It is also more difficult being the class that is split, so thanks again!

Tomorrow is parent involvement day at OMIS. I have already sent home the times and brochure on this but I have not heard from many parents. Our classroom visitation time is 11:00-11:45 a.m. tomorrow. You will be writing a description of your child’s monster that they drew. It should be a lot of fun and hope to see you. We will go directly to lunch afterwards.

If you have any questions, please let me know!

Thanks,

ASL 🙂

Hi parents!

Thank you all for the support of the Zoom-a-thon. Thank you to all the parents who came out to help volunteer, mark laps on the students backs, brought special snacks, and donated money to a great cause. Now what we need is for you to get those pledges collected as soon as possible!

Montgomery is Tuesday, October 20th. We will leave OMIS at 8:15 A.M. and will return around 5:30 P.M. Please be on time to pick up your child.  THERE WILL BE NO AFTERNOON BUS SERVICE!!!! Our class will be split between 4 buses so please watch out for an e-mail closer to the field trip that will tell you which bus your child will be on. If you have not paid the $43.00 for the field trip that is due ASAP. Your child may bring a camera and money for the gift shop on the field trip. Please understand that chaperones and myself WILL NOT be responsible for anything lost on this trip. You bring it, you are responsible for it. Also please have your child bring a snack and drinks for the trip. Please make sure drinks have a screw top on them so that they can be closed when not drinking them. The tour company also requests no red or purple drinks on the bus. Your child will be provided a lunch for the trip and their lunch account will be deducted $1.75. If you have any questions please contact me!

Thanks,

ASL 🙂

Hi parents,

Remember to please get you Montgomery money in ASAP. The cost for students is $43.00.

We are about to kick off our zoom-a-thon fun run fundraiser tomorrow. Please help your child collect pledges for this fundraiser.
