Welcome back to school from the SCHS family and consumer sciences department! I am excited about what is in store for the new school year! We will be beginning our first unit in each course the week of August 18th. In fashion we will be starting the “Clothing and Society” unit. In food and nutrition we will be starting “Food and Kitchen Safety”. In personal finance we will be starting the Building Wealth booklet beginning with “Budget to Save: What Does It Mean to Be Wealthy?”. FCCLA will have its first meeting this same week to elect officers. I’ll keep you posted on what is happening in the SCHS family and consumer sciences department.
FCCLA will meet in Mrs. Ray’s room immediately afterschool on Thursday, January 9, 2014. Topics to be discussed are state conference, community service projects, and the New Year FCCLA gathering. Make plans to attend this meeting!
The FCCLA Christmas Party will be Wednesday, December 18th immediately after school. Come by Mrs. Ray’s room to sign up for a bag of candy and a dish to bring to the party. Our theme is Build-A-Bite and we will be constructing gingerbread houses at the party. Make plans to attend the 2013 FCCLA Christmas Party this year!
The SCHS Food and Nutrition classes are preparing chocolate chip cookies next week to help fill the Christmas sotckings that the fashion classes are making.
My fashion classes are currently sewing Christmas Stockings to donate to SCHS FFA for the Backpack Buddies program. Our goal is 100 stockings! The SCHS FFA group purchased fabric and donated it for the fashion classes to sew the stockings. The stockings will be given to the SCHS FFA student organization to fill up with goodies. The SCHS FFA group will be distributing them.
href=”http://podcasts.shelbyed.k12.al.us/aray/files/2013/12/welcome.jpg”>Welcome to the SCHS Family and Consumer Sciences blog. My name is Alana Ray and I am the family and consumer scieces teacher at SCHS. Family and consumer sciences (FCS) is formerly known as Home Economics. Home economics was changed to FCS in 1994 due to the complex social and economic issues that individuals, families, and communities face today. Like any other applied science, FCS has evolved with society and technology. Our emphasis is on issues relevant to today’s individuals and families, skills critical to successful living and working in the 21st century global society. At SCHS the following classes are offered under FCS: Family and Consumer Sciences, Fashion, Food and Nutrition, Career Preparedness and Personal Finance.
