ELA Week of 5/8 – 5/12

  1. Bell Ringer: Read for fun!
  2. Get new roots #26-28. Final gold test is Tues. 5/16.
  3. Pass back Midsummer Moment projects and other grades.
    1. Any students who made a 41-below  on the Midsummer Moment gold project may set up an appointment with me to work on the project in order to receive a better grade.
  4. Begin writing rough draft. Prompts and rubrics can be found here! On loose leaf paper (name, date, and Midsummer Rough Draft (prompt choice) as the title),  spell out RACES vertically and brainstorm each letter. Focus on completion of ideas rather than sentences. Should take less than half a page. Focus on getting the invisible ideas in their head visible on the paper.
    1. Turn vertical RACES list into a paragraph (6-7 sent) to write below the line.

Homework: Finish rough draft. Due tomorrow for peer editing, which on average increases final draft grades by almost 2 letter grades. Also, all books and fines are due to the library by Wednesday, May 10.

  1. Bell Ringer: Read for fun! 
  2. Review roots!
  3. Students with completed rough draft will peer edit someone’s paper who has a different  topic. Prompts and rubrics can be found here!
    1. Read it once. Does it make sense? Mark best part (star). Mark confusing parts (?).
    2. Read it again. Are there transition words/phrases with the 2 pieces of evidence?
    3. Read a last time. Label each sentence for RACES.
  4. Write So what? Answer on a half sheet of paper and turn in (5 bronze points).
  5. Open Google Doc. Share with teacher (ccarter). Begin typing rough drafts in a Google Doc.

Homework: If needed, finish hand-writing  your rough drafts. We will type tomorrow! 🙂 Roots test (gold) is next Tuesday. Also, all library books and fines are due tomorrow

  4. Today’s goals include: type essay in MLA format and use paperrater.com
    1. MLA format should be in Times New Roman 12 font, 1 inch margins, and double spaced. You should also have the appropriate heading and title.
    2. Type final drafts!  Prompts and rubrics can be found here!

Homework :  Essays should be mostly completed and are due (shared with ccarter) by the end of class tomorrow. Final roots test is Tuesday 5/16 (gold).

  1. Bell Ringer: Read for fun.
  2. Pass back roots quiz from Friday. Discuss grades and confirm gold grade final roots test on Tuesday the 16th.
  3. Watch act 5, discuss the dramatic irony that makes this scene so funny.
  4. As a “final outcome” review activity–in Writer’s Notebooks– make an updated character map for ALL characters (teachers cover our master wall map).
  5. Pop Quiz

  3. Introduce the visual gold project. Show teacher examples, instruction sheet, and rubric.
    1. Brainstorm a class list of big moments from the play.
    2. Have students pick a moment, write a summary, and find 3 quotes for rough draft on loose leaf.
    3. If time allows, sketch out scene on rough draft.
