Tuesday the halls were filled with yellow as the students and teachers dressed as plain belly and star bellied Sneetches! Wednesday the students and teachers wore black and some even had red bowties to celebrate the Dr. Seuss classic the Cat in the Hat. Elephants in gray, no matter how small, were reading and watching Horton Hears a Who Thursday. Finally, on Friday the school celebrated Read Across America by dressing up as all different types of book characters across the genres. There was Mr. Popper, Pinkalicious, Henry and Mudge, Arthur, and even Mrs. Frizzle from the Magic School Bus Series. Mrs. Frizzle came to our classroom as a guest reader, and then Officer Fuller from the Calera Police Department came by to read a Dr. Seuss classic Firday. Calera Elementary joined with the PTO and the Shelby Co. School of Technology, Culinary Arts Group to host a special luncheon for Calera Heroes. Local leaders, policemen, firemen, and emergency workers were invited to have lunch at Calera Elementary last week. Different classrooms made signs to welcome and thank the local heroes. Other classrooms wrote thank yous, made placemats, decorated tables, and even gave the heroes a special “cheer” performance. The whole school participated in different ways to make everyone feel welcome and appreciated. The students were thrilled to see all the heroes, especially those in uniform. The lunchroom was full of smiles and high fives as the students and teachers meet the local heroes. Calera Elementary hopes to make this an annual event.

Oh what fun it is when it SNOWS in Alabama! I absolutely had to take our class outside to see, touch, taste, and ENJOY the snow! We are studying weather in Science right now, so the rain, sleet, and snow last week was a perfect way to introduce all the different types of percipitation! We enjoyed seeing the snow and writing about it in our science journals. We also got online and visited www.weather.com. There we were able to see the temperature, radar, and photos from across the state. The students had a wonderful, real life, learning experience about WEATHER! We also enjoyed the extra sleep the next day, due to a short weather delay!
