In the Locomotors Unit, students learned and practiced skills such as skipping, hopping, jumping, galloping, sliding, and marching, to name a few. In the Cooperative Games Unit, students put to use everything learned in previous units such as general space, personal space, pathways, and varying degrees of force, different levels and all locomotor skills. They used these skills in fun and dynamic games for their age level. The two bones taught this month were the sternum and femur. Ask your child to say their bones for you!

Mt Laurel Physical Education

We are off to a great start this year in Physical Education! We have enjoyed meeting all of our Kindergarteners and new students in other grade levels. Kindergarten and first grade have been learning PE procedures, rules, personal space, force, pathways and levels in the “MY Space, Your Space and Our Space Unit”. They have also learned cues for running, skipping, hopping, jumping, twirling and leaping in our “Locomotor Unit”. They have learned the location and scientific names for thier patellas, cranium and phalanges. Second through Fifth Grade started the year off with a “Cooperative Games Unit” where students practice working with partners, small groups and large groups to accomplish specific goals. Students learned the 4 C’s to use in these cooperative games: Cooperation, Communication, Commitment and Contribution. Second and Third grade just completed thier “Soccer Unit” and finished up with games of Line Soccer. Fourth and Fifth Grade completed their “Frisbee Unit” with games of Ultimate Frisbee which they absolutely love. The muscles second and third grade have learned so far are biceps, triceps and trapezius. Fourth and fifth grade have been learning about the Skeletal System and Muscular System.

All grade levels started Track Club last week. This is something that students in kindergarten through fifth grade will do each Tuesday during their PE time. Students will walk/run laps on the track and be rewarded for their miles with all types of unique beads to put on their track club necklace. If you would be interested in volunteering to help us on Tuesdays please email agulock@shelbyed.k12.al.us.
Please remember that your child needs to have their tennis shoes daily for Physical Education. Crocs, Chaco’s, flip flops, sandals, boots and even the TOM like shoes are not supportive for the activities we do. Our main goal is for your child to be safe and successful in the activities we provide.
