SUMMER READING CHALLENGE from the OMIS Library and Mrs. Sears:

Please help your student stay on top of their reading development by having them read regularly over the summer. Consider signing your student up for the Scholastic Summer Challenge at www.scholastic.com/bookfairs/record which runs from May 1 through August 21, 2010. The goal is to record 50,000,000 minutes of reading. Not only can students access the Challenge, they can take part in book-themed polls, games and more.
Last year’s winning school logged in 683,057 reading minutes and I am convinced that OMIS can do better than that! Let’s take the challenge, read this summer to excel next fall!
The research done by Jimmy Kim says that students who read four or more books over the summer perform better on fall reading comprehension tests than students who read only one or no books over the summer. I agree based on my observations of student achievement throughout the years. Below are some suggested titles. Students are encouraged to read at least 4 books this summer.

S.O.R. Losers by Avi
Masterpiece by Elise Broach
Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis
How to Steal a Dog by Barbara O’Connor

The Roar by Emma Clayton
My Side of the Mountain by Jean George
Hatchet by Gary Paulsen
When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead (this year’s Newbery Award Winner)
