It may be necessary to add a couple of sectional days for the 7th/8th grade musicians…woodwinds or brass or percussion isolated…in order to work spots that are difficult for one section or another. If that is apparently needed, I will make sure to provide at least a week’s notice, and will also provide one-on-one or small group instruction for anyone with a LEGITIMATE need to miss that time, if needed.
Thanks for all you do – we’re having a great time and really starting to sound very good! I think parents and community members will be pleased with these young musicians at our Spring performances.

Thanksgiving week is near! Kids are working hard, and deserve a break!
A note went home earlier this week. This note contained a short snippet about the sheet sale – which also went home this week – and a reminder about the parent showcase next week. The letter is pasted below.
The parent showcase is a chance for parents to get a pulse on the band program at CMS, and isn’t meant to be a polished performance. I think you’ll enjoy the format – WE WILL BE IN THE CMS BANDROOM. The room will be arranged where parents are facing the student setup. It will be a little tight as we switch from Beginners to Concert group, but it shouldn’t be too bad. Please be mindful of the size of the room when planning to bring people.
Below is the letter! Have a great end-of-week!
We have a few things to bring to your attention.
Our bedsheet sale is happening as of today, 11/3! For every set of these amazing sheets your student sells, $5 will go toward their fees; more importantly, this is a great way for us to raise money to help get new music stands, technology, and instruments that we need! For selling 12 or more sets, you get a free set for yourself! There are several other amazing things about this sale – please read the brochure carefully. ORDERS ARE DUE ON 11/16/2015!
We will have a Parent Showcase concert on 11/12. THIS IS A REQUIRED PERFORMANCE FOR ALL STUDENTS WHO DO NOT HAVE A LEGITIMATE ILLNESS OR SPORTS CONFLICT. The Beginning Band classes will have a short presentation of what they do each day and what they’ve learned this year so far, and the Concert Band will perform for the parents and the Beginning Band members.
CHARMS is our new student database system. CHARMS will allow us to communicate via Email and text message with students and parents. We will use these “Blasts” to send out important information. They will not be used for long-form communication. We will still use Facebook and traditional Email for things like this letter.
Class Fees and shirt money need to be taken care of as soon as possible. I have a shirt for every student, as they are required next Thursday’s performance, and other performances. A student will not receive a shirt until he or she has paid for it. Fees are $25, and shirts are $10.
I’m having an amazing year with these young ladies and gentlemen. Thank you SO much for allowing me to be a part of their lives, and allowing them to make music together.
We’ll see you on 11/12!
Some upcoming dates are on the horizon:

I was happy to see everyone who came to out to Open House at CMS last night. A long night, with my own kids’ Open House, but a rewarding one!!!
The Homecoming Parade is this Friday. If you are checking out for the Parade, please be sure to have the Express Check Out form filed with the office. For CMS Members who are MARCHING in the Parade (not Band-Aides…sorry) there will be a bus to the high school at 12:30. See Mr. Muncher for details.
Mattress Sale: is this Saturday, October 17th, from 9:00-3:00. Please make sure someone hears about it! 7th/8th Grade Students will be able to add $25 per mattress bought in their name to their student account (trip/fees, etc.)!
Fall Concert: The SCHS Band will present its Fall Concert next Thursday, October 22nd. The CMS Bands will not participate in that THIS year, because we are still trying to get the wheels fully on the road, but look for information about a separate performance for the CMS Bands at the beginning of November. Stay tuned!
The Sheet sale will be in November – information forthcoming!
Being the first post to by Blog, I wanted to take a moment to say hello to all of you, and let you know how proud I am to be a part of the Columbiana Middle School and Shelby County High School Band Programs. This is a ship that has sailed well over many years, and I intend to keep it righted and help its sailors reach new horizons! That was cheesy. I apologize…but it’s true!
Please note – we have the Beginning Band instrument meeting at 3:30 today, August 18th, in the CMS Band Room. Mr. Joey Harbison from Gadsden Music Company will be here. As he was a Middle School director for many years, he is amazing with the kids, and it should be a great afternoon. You DO NOT have to be here for two hours. If you can make it at 3:30, please do. Otherwise, arrive when you can!
My Google Calendar, complete with lesson plans and assignment updates, will be posted here as soon as IT can get it linked. Stay tuned!
