 Today there will be a track meet at Pelham HS

*The Book Fair will begins today and continues until Friday so bring your money if you would like to purchase any books.

*Please keep collecting Box Tops for Education.  For every 10 that you turn in, you will receive a tardy to class pass.  Teachers will receive a jean stickers for every 10.  The deadline is Monday, Feb 29th.

*Congratulations to the student of the week:  Vanessa Avalos.  She was nominated by Ms. Hamilton and Ms Green.  Vanessa has exhibited the character traits of service and compassion by helping out other students.  She is also a model student with work ethic and behavior.

*African American History Spotlight for the Day: Did you know that Guion Bluford was the first African American in space?  He was on a Challenger Space Shuttle mission in 1983 and spent time on several other space missions. In total he logged more than 688 hours in space.

 *We are on an activity schedule today for COTS.  Kona Ice will be here this afternoon during COTS.

*Baseball has a game today in Centerville at 4pm

*Saturday school is tomorrow for those students assigned to it.

*African American History Spotlight for the Day: Did you know that Birmingham native and minister Fred Shuttlesworth was an active participant in the Civil Rights Movement with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.? He organized and participated in many sit ins and freedom rides during the Civil Rights Movement. The Birmingham airport is named after him.  He died in 2011.

*African American History Spotlight for the Day: Did you know that Shirley Chisholm was the first African American female elected to Congress?  She served the state of New York in the House of Representatives for 7 terms (14 years).  While in office she fought for the rights of women and minorities.  She also tried to run for the US presidency in 1972.

*The BETA club induction will be held this morning.  All students will attend and must be on their best behavior in the gym.  This is a solemn ceremony.

*African American History Spotlight for the Day: Did you know that the first African American to have a book of poems published was Phyllis Wheatley in 1773?  She was a slave owned by a prominent Boston family who allowed her to read and write.  She was freed upon her master’s death. Even George Washington praised her for her poems. She died at the age of 31.

 *Any 8th graders who did not turn in their high school registration packets to Ms. Allen need to bring them to Ms. Fenn as soon as possible.

*There is a mandatory parent meeting for those interested in MMS cheerleading tonight at 5:00 PM in the media center.  Registration packets will be available for pick-up that night

*Teachers don’t forget we have PLC meetings after school today.

*The soccer team has a game tonight against Alex City.  The girls play at 5 and the boys play at 7pm.

*Congratulation to the student of the week:  Terion Lilly.  He was nominated by Ms. Fenn.  Ms. Fenn states that Terion has demonstrated the character traits of service and responsibility.  Every Friday after Backpack buddies, he breaks down the boxes and takes them to the recycling bin for her.

This Week’s Announcements

*The baseball game for today has been cancelled.

*The BETA Club Induction Ceremony will take place on Wednesday, February 24th at 8:15am in the gym.

*Thursday will be a Pajama Day to help out the wrestling team.

*Friday Kona Ice will be here at MMS and the proceeds will go to the MMS Chess Club.

*Monday, February 29th will be the MMS African American History program.

*Beginning Monday, March 1st through Friday, March 4th , MMS will host a Library Book Fair.

*There will be no school for students on Friday, March 11.

*Soccer will have games on Monday and Wednesday this coming week.  Baseball will have games on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

*Congratulations to Bella Fancher who was named the Student Citizen of the Year from MMS.  She was recognized this week by Judge Kramer.

*Congratulations to Ariel Suarez who qualified for the state tournament in wrestling.

*Congratulations to the 7th and 8th grade Scholar’s Bowl teams who were invited to compete in the National Scholar’s Bowl Tournament in New Orleans.

*African American History Spotlight for the Day: Did you know that Langston Hughes was a Poet, Essayist, Novelist, Playwright, Journalist, & Lyricist in the early 1900’s.  He is Sometimes called the Father of the Harlem Renaissance for his vivid portrayals of African American life in the early 20th century.

*African American History Spotlight for the Day: Did you know that Maya Angelou was an African-American author, playwright, poet, dancer, actress, and singer. She wrote over 36 books.  She is best known for her first autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969). She wrote a poem which she read at President Clinton’s inauguration and she was nominated for an Emmy for playing Kunte Kinte’s grandmother in the movie Roots. She died in 2014.

 *There will be a Mandatory parent meeting tonight at 6 PM in the PAC at the High School for any 8th grade girl interested in cheerleading next year.  You will pick up your packets tonight.

*African American History Spotlight for the Day: Did you know that BB King was known as the “King of the Blues”.  He was famous worldwide for his guitar playing and blues singing.  He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.  BB King died last year at age 89. His most famous song was “The Thrill is Gone” for which he won a Grammy.
