IMG_9431Heather Holmes

joined the Oak Mountain Middle School staff in 2006 as assistant band and choir director. In 2012, Mrs. Holmes was appointed Director of Bands for Oak Mountain Middle School. Mrs. Holmes teaches the Advanced Symphonic Band, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and Beginning Band. Prior to OMMS, Mrs. Holmes taught at her alma mater, Brooks High School, for 5 years, where she was responsible for Beginner Band, Concert Band, Marching Band, and Jazz Band. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education from the University of Alabama in 2001.  While at Alabama, Mrs. Holmes played trombone in the Million Dollar Band and the Alabama Wind Ensemble. She served on the Million Dollar Band “Band Staff” for two years and was trombone section leader her senior year.

In 2015, the OMMS Advanced Symphonic Band was invited to perform as a guest ensemble at the University of Alabama Middle School Honor Band.  The Advanced Symphonic Band was also invited to perform at the Alabama Music Educators Annual In-Service conference.

Her bands have consistently been recognized for superior ratings at the state and national level. In May 2012 AND May 2013, the Oak Mountain Middle School band was awarded the Best Overall Concert Band and the Esprit De Corps award at the Music in the Parks Festival in Orlando, FL. Her professional affiliations include Alabama Music Educators Association, Alabama Bandmasters Association, NAfME, and Sigma Alpha Iota.

Aside from teaching at OMMS, Mrs. Holmes sings in the Celebration Choir at First Baptist Church in Pelham. Mrs. Holmes resides in Birmingham with her husband Jason and children, Ella and William.

Mike Muncher

Mike C. Muncher is proud and excited to be the new Assistant Band Director at Oak Mountain Middle School, and will also spend part of the week assisting at Chelsea Middle School. For the last two years, Mr. Muncher was the Band Director at Columbiana Middle School and Assistant Band Director at Shelby County High School in Columbiana. Prior to that, he served as the Assistant Band Director and Director of Percussion at Benjamin Russell High School in Alexander City.

Mr. Muncher holds a Master of Music degree in Performance and Pedagogy from Oklahoma State University and a Bachelor of Music in Performance from Samford University in Birmingham, AL. As a performer, Mr. Muncher is a member of the Alabama Winds adult concert band and actively performs throughout Alabama. The Alabama Winds was recently selected to perform at the prestigious 2017 Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, which will happen just before Christmas. As an author, he has been published in the journal of the Percussive Arts Society, Percussive Notes, as well as the Newsletter of the Alabama Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society. As a clinician, Mr. Muncher represents Vic Firth Sticks and Mallets and has served as arranger and instructor for numerous high school and college marching bands throughout the South. He has performed clinics at several high schools and colleges, and has presented at The Alabama Bandmasters Association Summer Conference and the ABA Winter Conference. He was named to the 2009-2010 Cambridge Who’s Who in Leadership in Professional Careers.

Mike is a member of the National Association for Music Education, the Alabama Bandmasters Association, The Alabama Music Educators Association, the Percussive Arts Society, the Alabama Conference of Educators, and the Vic Firth Education Team.

In his spare time, he attends, reads, and watches every single learning experience he can get his hands on, and is an avid science fiction/science fantasy/DC Comics fanboy. Ultimately, Mr. Muncher just loves to teach music, and to spend time with his wife, Kelli, daughters Zoey (9), and Abby (7) and his new son Max (9 mo.)
