August 28 Announcement

1. Please be reminded that your signed Parent/Student Acknowledgment form is due September 4 to your 7th period teacher. Please remember to sign both sides!

2. Students who need copies of the dress code can pick them up in the front office.

3. IMPORTANT SGA ANNOUNCEMENT!! *All SGA applications are due to Mr. Wood or Mrs. Higginbotham by 3:00pm today…no exceptions.
And due to the increased number of applicants this year, the SGA sponsors are limiting the number of posters that can be hung on the cork strips around the school. Please hang no more than 4 posters.

4. 8th grade: The first National Junior Honor Society meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 2, during advisory. Please check in with your advisory teacher and come straight to D-hall. Important membership details will be discussed.

August 27 Announcements

1. The deadline to submit SGA applications is 3 p.m. tomorrow. Students interested in leadership can pick up an application today in the front office, A-17, or B-2.

2. Students interested in Scholars Bowl try-outs are reminded to plan ahead to stay after school next Tuesday, September 1, with either Mrs. Burdett (6th), Mr. Wood (7th), and Mr. Walker *8th). Parents will pick up at 3:45 p.m. in front of the school.

3. Show your OM spirit with a car decal – three styles are available in the front office and the cost is only $5!

4. Phase I applications are in the front office for 6th graders and previous members interested in community service. Questions may be directed to Mrs. Nobles, A-19.

5. 7/8th grade Students interested in learning more about foreign countries, global issues and politics should consider joining the Junior United Nations Assembly. Please plan to attend an informational meeting in the morning, 7:20 a.m. in A-17.

August 26 Announcements

1. 6th, 7th and 8th grade students interested in running for an SGA Representative position should see Mrs. Higginbotham (A-17) or Mr. Wood (B-2) for an application. The sponsors really need more 8th grade applications, so step up 8th grade to show everyone what great leaders you are! All completed applications are due this Friday by 3 p.m.

2. Are you a 7th or 8th grader who likes to learn about foreign places? Are you interested in important issues around the world? Would you like to try to make a difference? The OMMS Junior United Nations Assembly, known as JUNA, is about to get started. Meet in Mrs. Higginbotham’s room, A-17, this Friday morning at 7:20 a.m. for more information.

3. If you enjoy scholarly competition, please consider trying out for Scholars Bowl. Try-outs will be Tuesday, September 1, 3:05 -3:45 p.m. in these rooms: 6th – Mrs. Burdett – A18; 7th – Mr. Wood – B2; 8th – Mr. Walker – C19. Parents are requested to pick up promptly at 3:45 p.m. in front of the school.

4. Please return your signed Parent/Student Acknowledgement form to your 7th period teacher by September 4.

August 24 Daily Announcement

1. 7/8th graders are reminded to invite parents to Open House which begins in your first period class at 6 p.m.

2. Eagle Ambassadors helping this evening should be prepared to meet Mrs. Gilmore in the front lobby at 5:30 p.m.

3. Now that you are dressing out in P.E., please make sure your name is in your clothes, bag, etc. We already have lost PE clothes in the front office. Students who have asthma are reminded now that you are running and/or doing other physical activities, you may need your inhaler! Be sure to bring to school and inform Mrs. Stone, our nurse!

4. It’s time to slow down and take stock of your locker and combination before coming to the front office. Please avoid a locker jam by placing items appropriately, not overstuffing the locker, and slowing down to enter your combination.

5. SGA applications for interested students are available to pick up from either Mrs. Higg in A-17 or Mr. Wood in B-2. SGA representatives are selected from each grade level and collectively with officers will be the voice of the OMMS student body. Applications will be due back this Friday.

6. If you enjoy helping others, you may wish to pick up a Phase I application in the front office. Phase I is the OMMS community service organization and is open to all former members and sixth graders. Applications will be due to Mrs. Nobles in A-19 or Mrs. Angus in A-21 by
September 4.

August 21 Announcements

1. Students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades who are interested in running for an SGA grade-level representative, may pick up an application from Mrs. Higginbotham (A-17) or Mr. Wood (B-2) starting today. All applications will be due by next Friday, August 28th.

2. Students interested in raising/lowering our flag are invited to meet with Mr. Haynes on Monday, August 24, 7:30 a.m. in B-17 to discuss the responsibilities of Honor Guard.

3. There’s still time to enroll in Caesar Chess, a before school chess club. Regardless of your ability level, novice or experienced, you’re welcome to join…for details, visit

4. PE will begin dressing out on Monday. Your PE clothes, grey shirt, navy shorts, must be labeled with your first/last name!

5. By now, you should have invited your parents to meet your teachers. 7/8th grade open house is Monday, 8/24 and 6th grade is Tuesday, 8/25. The event is scheduled from 6-7:30 p.m. and parents will begin in your first period class, so be sure to inform them of the name/location.

6. Please be reminded of these gala procedures:
> 6th graders may arrive tonight only from 5:45-6 p.m. for orientation. 7/8th graders should arrive between 6:30- 7p.m.
> A variety of snack foods, concession items and soft drinks will be sold, so additional money will be needed.
> SCHOOL DRESS CODE is the attire.
> Parents will follow the gala traffic pattern posted on the school’s website under maps. The traffic flow begins in the OMES parking lot. Students will dismiss along the bus canopy at an administrator’s signal. Pick up times are 9 p.m. for 6th, 9:30 p.m. for 7th, 10 p.m. for 8th.

August 20 Daily Announcement

1. First Priority is looking for leaders! If you’re interested in being on the leadership team, please plan to meet Monday, August 24, 7:15 a.m. in Mr. Richardson’s room.

2. Students interested in joining the Robotics Club and/or participating in the BEST robotics competition should see Mrs. Whitehead in C-3 and plan to attend tonight’s meeting, 6 p.m. in C-

3. Any student, grades 6-8, who is interested in running for an SGA grade-level representative, should plan to pick up an application from Mrs. Higginbotham (A-17) or Mr. Wood (B-2) starting tomorrow.

4. Please encourage your parents to come to open house next Monday (7/8) or Tuesday (6). Important information, including your previous ACT scores and I-now information will be distributed to parents. Open house is scheduled each night from 6- 7:30 p.m.

5. Gala tickets go on sale today – $7 – be sure to put your name on the ticket! Remind parents that you are dropped off at the front of the school, but picked up on the west side of the school. Pick up times are 9 p.m. for 6th, 9:30 p.m. for 7th, and 10 p.m. for 8th.

August 19 Announcement

1. Open House to introduce parents to teachers is as follows:

2. Gala tickets go on sale tomorrow at lunch for $7. Please do your best to have correct change or bring a check made payable to OMMS. Be sure to write your name on your ticket!

3. If you ride bus 03-4 and are missing an athletic bag, please see Mrs. Rucker. IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT YOU LABEL YOUR PERSONAL BELONGINGS BROUGHT TO SCHOOL…SPORTS BAGS, LUNCH BOXES, P.E. CLOTHES, ETC. A girl’s fabric lunch bag is awaiting its owner in the front office.

August 17 Announcements

  1. It is very important that you take the time to label all personal belongings, especially agendas, P.E. clothes, lunch bags and band instruments. A girl’s Vera Bradley lunch bag is currently awaiting its owner in the front office – see Mrs. Rucker to claim.


  1. Eagle Ambassadors should plan to meet Wednesday, August 19, 7:20 a.m. in B-10 to discuss upcoming events.


  1. Please be informed that you must have a teacher’s pass to be in the halls during a class period. Passes are also needed if you have a locker jam or need to use the front office telephone.


  1. We will begin our rotation schedule tomorrow. When the 7:40 a.m. bell rings, please proceed to your locker and then your 6th period class.


  1. Please invite your parents to meet your teachers at next week’s “Open House.” 7/8th grade teachers will welcome parents Monday, August 24, while 6th grade teachers will be available on Tuesday, August 25. Times each night are 6-7:30 p.m.


  1. The North Shelby Library is offering students a chance to earn community service hours this semester with the first date September 12. A variety of tasks will be available and you may register online at Click the calendar button for details. Space is limited, so act quickly.


  1. If you plan to attend this Friday’s gala, here’s the scoop:


>          Tickets will be sold at lunch Thursday & Friday for $7; $8 if purchased at the door.

>          School dress is the appropriate attire.

>          Only OMMS students may attend – no siblings, relatives or friends from other schools.

>          Only OMMS students who exhibit appropriate school behavior will be allowed to attend.

>          Sixth graders only may arrive between 5:45-6 p.m. for their gala orientation that will begin at 6 p.m.

>          Seventh/eighth graders may arrive between 6:30-7 p.m.

>          Drop-off is at the front of the school. The gala will officially begin at 7 p.m.

>          Students are not allowed to ride home on a friend’s bus to attend the gala – buses are used to transport students for educational purposes, not social.

>          Pick-up will be on the west side of the school at the designated times. Car-pooling is encouraged to ease traffic on Hwy. 119. The gala traffic pattern map is posted

>          Pick up times: 9 p.m. for 6th, 9:30 p.m. for 7th, and 10 p.m. for 8th.
