April 29 E-news

1. 8TH grade girls are reminded you’ll meet for the “Girls Can” camp informational session this afternoon during 7th period in the cafeteria.

2. All 8th grade NJHS members should make plans to attend a meeting on Monday, May 2nd during advisory. Members will meet outside Ms. Grimes’s room to discuss tapping and induction.

3. Great news! The kickball team registration deadline has been extended until next Tuesday! Payment will be due with registration! The winning team will earn casual dress days!

4. Please make sure you have adequate funds in your cafeteria account for the remaining 19 days of school. No charges are allowed.

5. FCCLA final bake sale is as follows: Monday – 6th; Tuesday 0 7th; Wednesday – 8th. Treats will be just $1, and you must have a teacher’s pass/permission to get a yummy treat during 7th period.

6. There’s still time to reserve a yearbook prior to the May 20 distribution date. Please submit a $40 payment (check with student name on it) to Mrs. Graham to put a book on hold. If you’ve previously put a book on lay-away, the final $20 payment is due by May 2.

April 28 Announcements

1. Spring Fling kickball tournament forms/payment must be submitted by tomorrow! No exceptions! The deadline for t-shirt orders has passed! Spring Fling will combine music, food, inflatables, competition and entertainment…make your plans to attend next Friday evening, May 6!

2. If your name is Madeline and you are missing colored markers, please see Mrs. Rucker.

3. The DC field trip student/parent meeting is Monday, May 2, 6 p.m. in the cafeteria.

4. SGA applicant forms are due today to Mrs. Higg in A-19 or Mr. Wood in B-2. Students running for SGA office should be sure and sign up for a speech recording time outside B4 today or tomorrow. Students will record speeches during Advisory starting on Monday.

5. Congratulations to our Robotics Team whose skilled expertise propelled them to win the TSA competition yesterday in the areas of Programming, Driver Skills, and Teamwork!

6. It’s yearbook time! If you have a book on layaway, please submit your remaining balance by Friday, May 6. If you know for sure you have not reserved and paid for a book, and wish to get your name on the waiting list, you may submit $40 to Mrs. Graham in hopes to receive a book on May 20 when books will be distributed during P.E. Pre-paid books will be distributed first followed by those on the wait list. Students absent on May 20 will receive their book upon return to school. Students who write/draw anything inappropriate in someone else’s yearbook will be financially responsible to replace the book.

SPORTS NEWS

* Good luck to both the 6/7th grade girls’ lacrosse teams headed to the playoffs next Tuesday! The 6th grade Red team will play Mt. Brook, while the 7/8th Blue team will play Vestavia!

* Football workouts resume today. Please remember to submit your fundraiser orders.

* The deadline to sign up for XC is tomorrow at B-2. Physicals must be on file prior by next Tuesday as try-outs are Wednesday and Thursday.

April 27 Announcements

1. SGA officer forms are due tomorrow, 4/28 to Mrs. Higg or Mr. Wood.

2. Students travelling to DC are reminded of the student/parent meeting on Monday 5/2, 6 p.m. in the OMMS Cafeteria.

3. *8th graders interested in being on the 2016-17 OMHS Relay for Life Committee should pick up an application from Mrs. Rucker. Completed forms will be due May 11.
*8th graders are also reminded to turn in banquet forms by May 6.
*8th graders are also reminded to turn in OMHS registration/fans camp info to the box in the front office.

4. Eagle Ambassadors who missed the meeting should stop by B-10 today for important information.

SPORTS NEWS

* There is no OMMS football workout today. Workouts resume tomorrow in shorts/helmets. Coca Cola fundraiser orders are due tomorrow.

* There is no OMHS 9th grade football practice today…resumes tomorrow.

* XC sign up continues outside Mr. Wood’s door until Friday 4/29. You must have a current physical on file for the May 4th and 5th tryouts.

April 22 Announcements

April 20 Announcements

1. Attention 8th graders! The 9th grade transition meeting is Monday, April 25, 6 p.m. at the OMHS Performing Arts Center. Virtual lockers will be activated on Tuesday, April 26 at 8 a.m. Details will be discussed at the meeting.

2. Please plan ahead to have lunch money daily as the cafeteria cannot accept charges. Negative balances must be satisfied as soon as possible. We are pleased to report that the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture along with SC schools will offer free breakfast and lunch for students 18 years of age and younger starting June 1 through July 22. Oak Mountain Intermediate School will serve as the site for OM area schools. Breakfast will be served from 7:30 – 8 a.m., and lunch will be served from 11 a.m. – noon. No application is needed to take advantage of this opportunity.

3. Students staying for Eagle Ambassador interviews should report to Mrs. Gilmore’s Room B-10 after school. We will get started with instructions at 3:15 p.m. You will be able to call for your parents to pick you up after your interview is over – 3:50 – 5 p.m.

4. The Sign Language Club will meet tomorrow morning, 7:15 a.m. with Mrs. Nalls.

5. Are you a leader? Do you want to have a voice in your school, help plan student events, and represent your fellow students’ ideas? If so, you should consider running for an SGA office. Available positions are president, vice president, secretary, treasurer and reporter. Students interested in running should pick up an application from Mrs. Higginbotham or Mr. Wood. Applications are due next Tuesday, April 26. Only those running for president must be current SGA representatives.

6. Summerfest tickets go on sale today at lunch for $5. In addition to concession items, Steel City Pops and Chick-fil-a nuggets will be available to purchase for $4 each. This fun event, planned by your SGA, will be from 1-3 p.m. for sixth & seventh graders. Eighth graders may stay until 4 p.m. unless you need to ride the bus home. Activities include glow face painting, music & dancing, competitive games, lip sync, and Guitar Hero!

SPORTS NEWS

* Tomorrow is the deadline to submit football eligibility forms to Coach McGaughy!
* Boys’ basketball try-outs are May 16-19. There is no additional try-out in the fall, so if interested, see Coach Adams and make sure you have a physical on file by May 9.
* Rising 6/7th grade girls interested in basketball should sign up with Coach Noel. Rising 9th grade girls are requested to contact amcgowan@shelbyed.k12.al.us

April 19 Announcements

1. SGA will meet tomorrow morning, 7:15 a.m.

2. Students interviewing tomorrow for Eagle Ambassador will be allowed to change clothes (if desired) and report to B-10 by 3:15 p.m. Once your interview is complete, you’ll be able to call home for transportation; interviews could be over as early as 3:50 p.m., or as late as 5 p.m. depending on your personal schedule.

3. 7th graders who have failed to turn in their NJHS membership applications will have until tomorrow to submit. However, you must have a written letter of explanation to Ms. Grimes as to why it is late.

4. Good luck to our Robotics team who heads to World competition tomorrow in Kentucky!!

5. 8th graders will receive OMHS registration packets tomorrow with Progress Reports. Please note the parent/student OMHS orientation meeting is Monday, April 25, 6 p.m. at the high school’s Performing Arts Center.

6. Regarding Friday’s Summerfest:

* Admission is $5. Tickets sold Wednesday – Friday during lunch.
* Extra money will be needed for the concession stand, Steel City Pops, Chick-fil-a, etc.
* Music, dancing, face paint, lip sync, and Guitar Hero competition plus other games are planned
* Attire – to be announced
* Times: 6/7th graders – 1 – 3 p.m. – you will go home as you usually do at 3 p.m.
8th graders – 1 – 3 p.m. – if going home by bus or 1 – 4 p.m. if being picked up as a car rider. Parents will pick up in front of the school.

Congratulations to our Track Team for their placements at the Shelby County Championships! Our girls’ took 2nd place, while boys finished 4th. A new OMMS record was established in the 4 x 100 boys’ – 46.67!

April 16 Announcements

1. All unclaimed clothing from the gym will be donated Friday morning.

2. 8th graders are reminded to turn in community service hours to Ms. Grimes today.

3. Today is the deadline for spring photo orders.

4. Eligible 7th graders are reminded to submit NJHS applications to a sponsor today.

5. The NS Library Teen Council is hosting a hot dog/marshmallow eating contest this Thursday! Participants and spectators are welcome! You can register online at the library’s website: nsyouth@shelbycounty-al.org

6. Make your plans today to attend Friday’s Summerfest…no tests, let’s rest! This fun event, in lieu of a spring evening gala, is planned in your honor! We will be on a special bell schedule to accommodate a variety of fun that starts at 1 p.m.
> Admission is $5 and tickets will be sold at lunch Wednesday – Friday.
> Sixth & seventh graders will dismiss at 3 p.m. as usual.
> Eighth graders will dismiss at 4 p.m. with parent pick-up at the front of the school.
> The concession stand will be open and other specialty food items will be offered.
> Music & dancing will be in the gym while a variety of fun, new games will be in the cafeteria.

7. The Harlem Wizards are coming to town on Monday, May 9, and our coaches, Jay McGaughy, and Dustin Kennedy, will be matching skills with them on the basketball court! Check out www.harlemwizards.com for details. Ticket order forms are also available in the front office!

April 15 Announcements

1. Please note that students cannot be pulled from an instructional class except for medication. If you forget items at home, you must have a teacher’s permission to call home. If you need to have a parent sign a document, you must leave it with the front office for your parent and it will be sent to you when possible.

2. NJHS community service hours are due Monday to Ms. Grimes.

3. Eagle Ambassador forms are due by 3 p.m. today to Mrs. Gilmore, B-10.
