  1. It’s not too late to join the chess club! Applications can be picked up from the front office or C-18. The fun begins next Wednesday, 7-7:40 a.m. in C-18.

 

  1. Please note we’ll be on an afternoon activity schedule tomorrow to celebrate 7th graders involved in athletics at a pep rally (XC will be a future date). Wear your OM spirit wear or red, white, or blue!

 

  1. If you’re interested in learning sign language, Mrs. Combs invites you to free lessons beginning Tuesday, September 9, 7-7:40 a.m. in C-8.

August 21 Announcement

  1. Applications for the chess lessons now forming can be picked up in C-18 or the front office. Chess is a fun way to improve your thinking skills while making new friends.   1. 8th grade only:    Any NJHS member interested in volunteering for the OMIS Back to School Splash this Saturday must sign up outside Ms. Grimes’s room by 3 p.m. today. August 20 Announcement

Interested in chess? If so, please see Mr. Dearwent in C-18 to pick up an information sheet and application. Caesar Chess, LLC, under the instruction of Caesar Lawrence, will host a chess club here if a minimum eight students enroll. The cost is $30/month, plus a one-time fee of $20 for supplies. Playing chess can improve cognitive abilities, critical thinking, analysis, time management and self- discipline. The club will meet on Wednesdays, 7 – 7:40 a.m. under the supervision of Mr. Dearwent. For additional information, please visit www.caesarchess.com

 

  1. If you have asthma and need an inhaler at school, and have not checked in with our nurse, Mrs. Stone, please do so. P.E. activities are underway and will continue throughout the school year. Please be advised that we must have the appropriate medical forms on file for you to carry an inhaler with you during the day.

August 13 Announcement

  1. Gala tickets go on sale tomorrow during lunch for $7. Be sure to write your name on your ticket.

 

  1. The First Priority Leadership Team will meet Monday, 8/18, 7:15 a.m. in B-20.

 

  1. Students interested in running for SGA representative can pick up an application from Mrs. Polizos in G-7. Applications are due next Monday, August 18, by 3 p.m. to Mrs. Polizos, Mrs. Higginbotham (A-17), or      Mr. Wood (B-2).

 

  1. 8th grade girls interested in trying out for the OMHS soccer team should contact Coach DiPiazza (ddipiazza@shelbyed.k12.al.us) prior to Friday. Tryouts will be held from Monday, August 25 – Thursday, August 29, 3:15 – 3:45 p.m. All girls trying out need a copy of a physical and a permission slip.

 

  1. Please be reminded that any medication needed (over the counter or prescription) must be brought in by an adult. All medication must be age appropriate, unopened in the original container, and unexpired. Medication forms can be found online or in the front office.

August 12 Announcements

  1. Please note that buses are available to transport students to/from home/school for educational purposes and not social opportunities (such as attending the gala with a friend) Legitimate needs to ride home on another bus with a fellow student must be presented to Mrs. Cruce in writing at least 24 hours in advance. Please include the reason, alternate bus number, and emergency contact information.

Students who move can only change buses once our registrar has verified the new residence with parents and a new bus card is issued.

 

  1. If you are unable to attend school, please have your parent call the front office as early as possible to report your absence. The office opens at 7 a.m. daily.

 

  1. Eagle Ambassadors assisting with tonight’s open house are reminded to arrive in uniform by 5:30 p.m. and report to B-14.

 

  1. Lunch swaps today include Dearwent eating 5B; Slaten 5C.

 

  1. Sixth graders should remember to tell parents the name and classroom number of your first period teacher.

 

 

 

                The back to school gala is this Friday! Here’s what you need to know:

 

                >              Tickets are sold at lunch Thursday & Friday for $7. The cost is $8 if purchased at the door.

                >              This event is for OMMS students only; no siblings or friends from other schools.

                >              The attire is school dress code.

>           Drop off is at the front of the school. You may be dropped off between 6:30 – 7 p.m., but the

                                Event does not begin until 7 p.m.

>              Money will be needed to buy concessions and specialty food items – pizza, chicken tenders & Steel City Pops.

>              Games are set up in the cafeteria; dancing is in the gym.

>              Pick up is along the bus canopy on the west side of the school. Carpooling is encouraged. The gala traffic pick-up map is on the school’s website. Pick-up times are 9 p.m. for 6th; 9:30 p.m. for 7th; and 10 p.m. for 8th.

August 11 Announcements

  1. Sixth grade students are reminded to invite their parents to meet your teachers tomorrow night at Open House, 6 p.m. Make sure your parents know your first period teacher as that is where they will begin. The event ends at 7:48 p.m. 7/8th grade “meet & greet” is Tuesday, August 19, 6 p.m.

 

  1. The Back to School gala is this Friday evening, 7 – 10 p.m. Tickets will be sold at lunch Thursday & Friday for $7; $8 if purchased at the door. The attire is school dress. Additional monies will be needed to specialty food items (chicken tenders, pizza & Steel City Pops). Pick-up times are 9 p.m. for sixth graders, 9:30 p.m. for seventh, and 10 p.m. for eighth. Carpooling is recommended. Drop-off is at the front of the school, however, pick up is on the west side of the school and the gala traffic pick-up pattern is posted on the school’s website.

 

  1. Please be reminded that the first bell rings at 7:40 a.m. Students are expected to be in their desks by the 7:50 a.m. bell. Students who arrive at 7:50 a.m. or later, must be checked in by an adult at our attendance window.

 

  1. Students who are in P.E. will be expected to dress out on Monday, August 18. If you need to purchase P.E. clothes, the cost is $10 for a shirt, $15 for shorts. Clothing is being sold daily this week during P.E.  It is imperative that you put your name in your clothing.

 

  1. NJHS members interested in volunteering at the OMIS Back to School Splash on Saturday, August 23, should contact Mrs. Janice Glenn (patrickjanice@bellsouth.net) for additional information. Shifts will be available from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

6th Grade Orientation – Wednesday

Sixth grade orientation (also known as Eagle Induction) will be held on Wednesday, August 6th from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m.

While attendance is not mandatory, it will be helpful for students to attend to become familiar with school procedures and locations of their classrooms before the first day of school.  The parent and student meeting will begin in the gym.  You may want to enter at the gym entrance, but other entrances will be open.
