It has been a great year!

Thanks so much for making this a great year! I hope you all enjoy your SUMMER BREAK!

 I will be moving to South Carolina after school is out to join my husband. He has taken a job at Toumey Medical Center in Sumter, South Carolina.

 I will miss seeing you next year, but I know you will love being 8th Graders!!

Monday: Today the students finished their introduction to propaganda by completing a web quest. They visited the following site: http://pbskids.org/dontbuyit and completed the worksheet found below.

Tuesday: Today we will go over correct answers for the Benchmark Study Guide. See attached below. IF STUDENTS DO NOT TURN IN LITERATURE BOOKS TODAY, THEY WILL BE ISSUED A DETENTION.

Thursday and Friday: We will have oral presentations for AR students who want to improve their grades. Otherwise, students will have time to study for other benchmarks and/or read. See instructions below:

Week of May 7

Monday: Today we reviewed for our test on The Giver. See Jeopardy game below.

Tuesday: Today the students will take a test on The Giver. I will also handout a review sheet for the upcoming Benchmark Exam. They may begin working on it.

Benchmark Review 4th Nine Weeks 2012

Wednesday: Today students will take notes on Propaganda. They may also continue to work on the Benchmark Review.

Thursday: Today students will work in small groups to analyze a print ad for propaganda and layout. They will also complete a review sheet using yesterday’s notes.

Friday: Today students will create their own print ad. They will use a propaganda device, words, and art. The ad must be visually appealing. They will write a short paragraph explaining how the propaganda device is evident in the ad.

THE LITERATURE BENCHMARK EXAM IS WEDNESDAY, MAY 16.

Week of April 30

Monday: Today we discussed Chapters 10 and 11 of The Giver. The students read/listened to Chapters 12 and 13 in class. We stopped to discuss and record questions and answers on the QAR sheet.

HOMEWORK: Finish reading Chapter 13.

Tuesday: Today the students will read Chapters 14-16, stopping to discuss periodically. They will work on Study Questions with a partner at the end of class. They should be prepared for a reading quiz on Wednesday.

Wednesday: Today we will have a reading quiz. After discussing the quiz, we will read Chapters 17,18,19. If we do not finish reading in class, the reading will be homework.

Ch. 16-19

Thursday: We will read Chapters 20 and 21, work on the QAR sheet, and discuss a possible theme for The Giver. Students should make sure all Study Questions are answered through Chapter 21.

Friday: Today we will finish reading The Giver. We will discuss the ending and a possible theme. Students should have all Study Questions answered by Monday.

Monday we will review and Tuesday of next week will be a test on The Giver.

Week of April 23

THE AR TEST IS FRIDAY. ALL AR BOOKS SHOULD BE READ BY THEN.

Monday: Happy Birthday, William Shakespeare! Today the students finished reading Chapter 1 and read Chapter 2 of The Giver. They recorded questions on their QAR sheets.

Ch. 1-5 Questions

Tuesday: Today the students read Chapters 3 and 4 of The Giver. We discussed as we recorded questions on the QAR sheet. For HOMEWORK tonight the students should read Chapter 5.

Wednesday: Today the students will discuss Chapter 5 and read Chapters 6 and 7. They will continue to record questions (and answers) on their QAR sheets. They should also be working on review questions as they finish each set of chapters.

Thursday: Today the students will take a quiz on Chapters 1-7 of The Giver. They will read Chapters 8 and 9, stopping to add to the QAR sheet.

Friday: Today students will take their AR tests if they have not already. They will read Chapters 10 and 11 of The Giver.

Week of April 16

Monday: Today we reviewed the answers on our mythology study guide by playing Trashketball. Students who were absent should come in tomorrow before school if they have any questions about the test.

Tuesday: Today is our mythology test.

Wednesday: Today the students will be creating a visual aid for our Word Wall.

Thursday: Today students will take notes from a power point on Dystopian Literature. We will also start reading The Giver.

Week of April 16

PLEASE OBTAIN A COPY OF THE GIVER BY LOIS LOWRY FOR YOUR CHILD. THE MEDIA CENTER IS SELLING COPIES FOR $7.00. YOU MAY ALSO CHECK ONE OUT OF A LIBRARY. IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING A FINANCIAL HARDSHIP, PLEASE JUST EMAIL ME OR TELL YOU CHILD TO SPEAK TO ME PRIVATELY ABOUT  BORROWING A BOOK.

Monday: We will go over the correct answers for the Review Sheet on mythology.

Tuesday: MYTHOLOGY TEST!!!

Wednesday: Today students will create a vocabulary word for our Word Wall.

Thursday: Students will take notes from a power point on Dystopian Literature. We will also read Chapter 1 of  The Giver.

Week of April 9

This week we will be conducting ARMT + Testing. Please make sure your child gets plenty of sleep. Healthy breakfasts will be prepared at school if your child does not have time to eat at home.

Monday- Friday: This week students will be viewing the Photo Stories we created last week. They will take notes using the Mythology Chart provided at the beginning of the unit. The students will also have time to read their AR books and complete a reading log in class.

Our mythology test is scheduled for MONDAY, APRIL 16. The students should study their introductory notes from the class powerpoint and their mythology charts.

Our AR test is scheduled for April 27. We will go to the lab to take this test. Students may test earlier if they finish their books.

Week of March 26

Monday: Teacher Work Day…No school for students.

Tuesday: Today we had an introduction to mythology. The students took notes from a power point and were given a chart of gods and goddesses from Greek and Roman mythology.

Wednesday: Today students will read some origin myths to include “The Creation”, ” The Golden Age”, and “The War in Heaven”. They will fill in a graphic organizer to help analyze the myths as origin myths.

Thursday: Today the students will view a Photo Story of the “Arachne” myth. They will add this myth to their graphic organizers and identify it as a transformation myth.

Friday: Students will be put in groups and randomly choose a myth to retell via Photo Story. They will read the myth, take jot notes, and see the instructions for creating a Photo Story.

Week of March 12

Monday: Today students went over the correct answers for the Benchmark Review by playing BINGO. They also had time to work on their original fairy tales.

IF THE STUDENTS HAVE NOT FINISHED THEIR ROUGH DRAFTS, THEY SHOULD PLAN TO COME TO MY ROOM WEDNESDAY MORNING TO FINISH THEM.

Tuesday: Today is the Literature Benchmark Exam.

Wednesday: Today we will proofread and revise our rough drafts and put them in final draft form.

Thursday: Today students will share final drafts in small groups. Each group will choose one to be read aloud to the class.

Friday: We will watch a video of classic folk tales and analyze them for traits from our notes/definitions.
