Week of January 30

Monday: Today we reviewed for our The Man Who Was Poe test. You can find the review sheet on last week’s post. Attached below you can find a jeopardy game to use as a review as well.

Jeopardy

Tuesday: Today we will take our test and read AR books. Students have had several opportunities to go to the media center. They need to obtain an AR book and have it approved no later than Friday of this week. We will also discuss an upcoming group project. The handout is attached below.

Board Game Rules and Rubric

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday: Students will work in groups to create their original board games based on our book. The games are due AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS ON MONDAY.

Students should be reading AR books every night. The deadline for the AR test is March 5.

Week of January 23

Monday: Today we added to our Crime Log (noting the locations and importance of clues found earlier). We read Chapters 14 and 15 in class.

HOMEWORK : Read through the end of Chapter 16!!

Tuesday: Reading quiz????? We will read Chapter 17 in class, add some characters to our character sheet, and begin to trace the plot of the novel.

HOMEWORK: NONE

Wednesday: We will read Chapter 18, review all clues, and identify clues as red herrings or legitimate clues.

HOMEWORK: None

Thursday: Today we will read Chapters 19 and 20, add to the plot diagram, and continue to trace the plot of the book.

HOMEWORK: Finish Chapter 20 if not finished in class.

Friday: Today we will finish reading the book. We will complete the plot diagram, noting the climax of the story, and finish the crime log. We will also complete the review sheet (attached below). Monday we will play a review game using this completed sheet.

Our test on The Man Who Was Poe is scheduled for January 31.

Week of January 16

Monday: No School- MLK Day!

Tuesday: Today we read Chapters 5 and 6 in class. We added notes to our Crime Log and took a reading quiz.

HOMEWORK: Read Chapter 7 and take notes in book or on sticky notes.

Wednesday: We will discuss Chapter 7 and make a list of suspects. Together we will read Chapter 8, and then students will read Chapter 9 either individually or with a partner. We will continue to update our Crime Log.

HOMEWORK: Read Chapter 10.

Thursday: Today we will review Part I of The Man Who Was Poe and read Chapter 11. The students will continue to annotate as they read and add to the Crime Log and Character Chart.

HOMEWORK: Finish Chapter 11 if not finished in class.

Friday: Read Chapters 12 and 13 using the CD. Add these characters to the character chart: Mr. Arnold and Helen Whitman.

 

NO HOMEWORK!!! Have a great weekend.

Week of January 9

The Man Who Was Poe will be available on the book cart Monday. The book costs $6.00. All students should have a copy in class on Wednesday. If your student is eligible for free/reduced lunch, or if there is a personal hardship making it difficult to obtain this book, please let me know.

Monday: We will read “Annabel Lee” by Edgar Allan Poe and analyze it with a partner. We will continue to try to understand the character of Poe.

Tuesday: We will watch the video “The Gold Bug” based on the short story by Edgar Allan Poe. This work is discussed in our upcoming novel.

Wednesday: We will begin reading The Man Who Was Poe. The students will work on the Crime Log (attached below). We will read the Prologue and Chapter 1.

 HOMEWORK:Finish reading if not finished in class.

Thursday: We will read Chapters 2 and 3 in class, adding to our Crime Log.

 HOMEWORK: Read Chapter 4.

Friday: We will complete a group project about setting and imagery in class.
