Week of February 27

Monday: Today students who were in DC took the poetry test. All other students had the chance to read AR books and/or take an AR test. Next MONDAY is our final AR day.

Tuesday: Today we will visit the BOOK FAIR. We will take notes on Folk Literature and read pages 652 and 653 in our literature books. The power point is linked below.

Wednesday: Today we will define dialect. We will read “Brer Rabbit and Brer Lion” on page 654 in our literature books. We will practice cause/effect and identifying theme in a story.

HOMEWORK: Read “The Lion, the Hare, and the Hyena” on page 660. Answer questions 3-6 on page 664.

Thursday: Today we will discuss homework and read “Aunty Misery” on page 742. We will work with a partner to answer assigned questions from page 746 and discuss.

Friday: Today the students will note traits of a Tall Tale. We will watch a video, noting elements of a Tall Tale and then read “Papa John’s Story” on page 767. We will complete an assignment for a daily grade today.

All students must have an AR test taken by the end of class on Monday. This will be a 100 point grade.

Week of February 20

Monday: NO SCHOOL!!!

Tuesday: Today we defined and recognized symbolism in a poem. The students also had time to work on final drafts of the poems they wrote Friday. If they did not finish their final drafts in class, they are homework!

Wednesday: Today the students will continue to analyze poetry, focusing on speaker, tone and theme. We will read “Madam and the Rent Man” (attached below) and “Almost Ready” (found in the lit books on page 811).

Thursday: Today students will prepare for the upcoming poetry test. They will analyze a poem individually and review all poetry terms that will appear on the test.

Friday: Today the students will take a test on Poetry.

The final day for AR testing is March5. All AR books must be read by then.

Week of February 13

Monday: Today students will learn the difference between poetry and prose and write a descriptive prose piece using IMAGERY.

Tuesday: Today students will define figurative language: simile, metaphor, personification. We will analyze the poem “Dream Deferred”.

Wednesday: Today the students will define hyperbole and continue to practice identifying figurative language. We will have poetry stations in class. Working in groups, students will move from station to station, analyzing poems for figurative language.

Thursday: Today the students will analyze the poem “Miss Rosie” and turn in their work for a daily grade.

Friday: Today the students will write a poem based on yesterday’s assignment.

Students should be reading AR books each night. March 5 is the deadline for taking an AR test.

Our poetry test is scheduled for February 24.

Week of February 6

Monday: Today we played and evaluated our board games based on the novel The Man Who Was Poe.

Tuesday: We took a “color quiz” and wrote a color poem as an introduction to our poetry unit.

Wednesday: Today we are defining poetry, listening to some poems to find sound devices and finishing/turning in color poems.

Thursday: Today we are defining the following: rhythm, rhyme, alliteration, assonance, onomatopoeia. We will read “Maggie and Millie and Molly and May” and answer questions with a partner.

Friday: We will define imagery and read “The Lake Isle of Innisfree” as a group. We will read the poem “Reapers” individually and answer questions to turn in for a grade.

Students should be reading AR books every night!! They must take an AR test no later than March 5. This will be a 100 point grade.
