We started our first internship rotation four weeks ago. All of the interns love to work at their internship site. The interns are learning new skills that they can transfer to a paid job setting in the future. During our classroom time, we are discussing and completing activities on communicating with co-workers, supervisors, and customers on a job site. Our interns are also e-mail pen pals with the Project SEARCH site in Idaho.
Our Project SEARCH program has started a Young Adults in Transition Club. During our first meeting, we discussed what a leadership role is, discussed officer roles and responsibilities, and elected officers for our club. We also have 3 different YAiT committees: Hospitality, Publicity/Photography, and Community Service/Outreach. The YAiT Club plans on completing two community service projects this year. The community service projects will be planned and implemented by our interns.

Wow! I cannot believe that we are finishing our third week at Project SEARCH. On the first day of school, the interns came in ready to go into the hospital to start their internships. But, we had work to do in order to prepare the interns to be independent in the hospital. Next week we will start the process of starting our interns in their internship sites. All of the interns are anxious and excited about starting their internships next week.
During the first week of Project SEARCH, the interns were in the classroom going through orientation for Project SEARCH and Shelby Baptist Medical Center. The interns learned how to properly wash their hands in order to keep themselves and others healthy. Additionally, they learned the life safety codes and expectations for the hospital.
During the second week of Project SEARCH, the interns learned how to push wheelchairs and hospital beds appropriately and safely down the hall. The interns enjoyed getting out of the classroom and learning new skills to help them be successful in their internships. Additionally, we have been working on our social skills, writing skills, and maturity.
During the third week of Project SEARCH, the interns went through a basic CPR Training Course. Project SEARCH would like to thank the Education Department at Shelby Baptist Medical Center for providing our interns with the opportunity to learn CPR basics. Additionally, the interns found out what their first internship will be. During class time, we have been going over expectations of behaviors and what they will be doing in their respective internships.
Work will start for the Project SEARCH class of 2014 on Monday, August 19 at 8 a.m. We are excited to start our new year!
We are proud to announce that the Project SEARCH Orientation for the Class of 2014 will be held at Shelby Baptist Medical Center on August 6, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. We are very excited to welcome our incoming class of interns.
