Welcome to the SCHS Counseling Blog! This year we have a new lead counselor, Mrs. Sarah Morris. Mrs. Keahey will continue to be with us 2-3 days each week although she will be out of the office on maternity leave until November 17, 2014. Be sure to check our blog periodically for important updates about college visits, scholarship deadlines, and other upcoming events.
Any junior or senior interested in applying for the Greater Alabama Council Youth Leadership Development Program should pick up an application in the Counseling Office. This program gives students the opportunity to build leadership skills by participating in small group meetings and community service projects. Participants also have the opportunity to earn scholarships for their service in the program.

Jefferson State Community College in partnership with the University of Montevallo, The Boy Scouts of America and the American Village are happy to announce the 4th annual Walsh Academy of Leadership. The Walsh Academy of Leadership (WAL) is a three day, two night leadership event hosted on the beautiful campus of the University of Montevallo. Students have an amazing amount of fun at the WAL with a talent show, notable speakers, teambuilding challenges, Montevallo Ghost Tours, Dramatic reenactments provided by the American Village, and the opportunity to meet and network with a diverse group of students from across the state! The program is limited to 30 students per year so not all who apply will be accepted.

The Mrs. Ora L. Jones Foundation will once again be awarding scholarships in honor of Mrs. Ora Jones. Throughout her life, Mrs. Jones significantly impacted and influence countless individuals by rendering sacrificial service. This scholarships is established with the following goal in mind: to help educate a child in order to motivate them to live out the principles modeled by Mrs. Jones so that they can demonstrate a life of service by reaching back and helping somebody else along life’s journey.
– Must have an acceptance letter to either a 2 or 4 yr college or university
– Must have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA
– Must submit a 1000 word typed essay which depicts the importance of the scholarship and describes how they will use their education to give back to the community
– Must provide a cover letter with a brief biography about yourself

Attention Seniors and Senior Parents!
The SCHS Local Scholarship Application is now available in the SCHS Counseling office. Completed applications will be reviewed by the SCHS Scholarship Committee. The Committee will help identify award recipients for the following local scholarships:
Bryant Bank Scholarship – $5000
Must be a SCHS graduate planning to attend University of Alabama
Billy Jones Scholarship – $5000
Must be a SCHS graduate planning to attend an Alabama university
Scott Armstrong Memorial Scholarship – $1000
Preferably a SCHS graduate planning to attend University of Alabama while involved with the band or softball
Columbiana Merchants and Professional Scholarship – $500
Must be a Columbiana resident who is reputable inside and outside the classroom, preferable who has not been awarded other scholarship funds
Jefferson State Counselor’s Scholarship
Must be planning to attend Jeff State and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Additional scholarships may be added to this list in the weeks leading up to the Scholarship Committee’s review meeting. The SCHS Local Scholarship Application is due April 24, 2015.
In addition, the Wilsonville Civitan Club has provided their application for the Mary L. Revis Scholarship which has been established to benefit civic-minded students. The application can be requested by email from Mrs. Morris and is available in the counseling office. Due April 17, 2015.
In coordination with the University of Montevallo, the Columbiana Public Library will be hosting a free ACT prep course on the dates and times below. The focus of this event is primarily to assist the 11th graders that will take the test in April. However, other students that are interested in taking this course are welcome to attend.

ALL SCHS Juniors will take the ACT Plus Writing for free at school on April 28, so this is a valuable resource to help prepare!
Alabama Power along with other local and national companies in partnership with Shelby County College & Career Center will once again be hosting the ‘Girls Can’ Construction Camp this summer.
Who: Rising 9th, 10th, & 11th grade girls
When: June 15-19, 2015 from 8:30am – 3pm each day
Where: Shelby County College & Career Center in Columbiana
Each day, participating students will engage in challenging hands-on projects while learning about different careers for women in the construction field. Camp will be led by journey-level tradeswomen team teaching with certified instructors from the College & Career Center. Camp will end on Friday, June 19th with a catered luncheon at 11:30 followed by a ceremony allowing parents, local dignitaries, and school administrators to view campers’ projects.
Girls Can Camp is a one-of-a-kind learning experience and is designed to be challenging and fun! This is also an ideal camp for girls who want to study engineering at a 2-year or 4-year college. Class size will be limited to 15 participants.
All 9th & 10th grade girls heard a presentation by Amy Shannon, Counselor at SCCCC, about Girls Can Camp at school. Applications are available in the counseling office.

The South Shelby Chamber of Commerce is offering three $1000 Scholarships to students seeking post-secondary education.
Students must be planning to attend one of the following:
- Four-year college or university
- 2 year community college
- Vocational school courses lasting a minimum of 1 year
- Other educational program lasting a minimum of 1 year
The scholarship application must be submitted to the South Shelby Chamber of Commerce scholarship committee no later than Friday, April 10, 2015.
Scholarship applications are available in the counseling office.
Mr. Burch Formal Wear is accepting applications for their scholarship program. Mr. Burch Formal Wear will be awarding one $1000 and four $500 scholarships to high school seniors who are planning to attend a college or university in the fall.

The Shelby County High School Academic Booster Club is accepting applications for their $500 2015 Scholarship.
In order to qualify, the following requirements must be met:
- GPA – 3.5 or higher
- ACT – 24 or higher
- Two letters of recommednation – one from a teacher and one from a community individual
- Essay – Topic: Please state in 100 words or less on “Why you plan to further your education”
- Current Resume
- Completed Application
- Applicant must be enrolled in a 2 or 4 year College beginning Fall semester 2015
Deadline: March 27

Jefferson State Community College will soon be holding auditions for the Jefferson State Singers, a 32-voice ensemble that provides scholarships to participating students.
Auditions will be held from 10:00am to 3:00pm (with a 45 minute lunch break at noon) on the following days:

Interested students should call Lisa Kimble at 205-983-5999 to set a 20 minute audition appointment. Scholarships award to selected students will come in the form of a full in-state tuition waiver. Additional requirements include acceptance to attend Jefferson State and maintaining a 2.5 GPA.
