Comment on the following quote, what does Degas

mean by this?

What use is my mind? Granted that it enables me to hail a bus and to pay my fare. But once I am inside my studio, what use is my mind? I have my model, my pencil, my paints. My mind doesn’t interest me. (

Continue working on ink drawing today…possible due

date to be thursday….

A look at this week:

Monday we will begin a new drawing.  I will give you a photo to copy.

You will divide it into quarters (1/4).  I will provide you

a white sheet of paper cut the same size as the phot.

Copy each square of the drawing onto your blank

paper.  Each square should be a different technique.

Use the following techniques:  crosshatch, hatch,

stipple, and scumbling.  Use a pencil.  This is due on Wed.

at the end of class on 1/13/10.  Thursday we will begin a

new drawing in pen!  I will provide the pen for you.  You will be

creating a simple still life out of pen using one of the techniques

you used in the photo drawing.  This is your choice.

Pick your favorite because this will be a larger drawing.

Don’t forget, you can’t correct with pen!  You must plan

out your drawing in pencil LIGHTLY first.

Key phrase:

An artist never really finishes his work, he merely abandons it.
- Paul Valery

what does this mean?  You must post your answer to the blog

by Thursday evening at 9:00 P.M.

We will continue working on your white still life this week…work hard to “look hard.”  Pay attention to shadows and highlights.  Notice where light is being reflected off of objects.  Work to get at least 5 different tonal values with each object.  Not just white black and gray.  You need SHADES of gray.  Good job on your hanging still life drawings!

Tomorrow is the field trip to Sloss Furnace and Vulcan Park.

We will depart by 9 a.m.  Be outside where the buses load at the back of the building behind the lunch room before then.  Report to your first period class!  When the bell rings for the end of the class period go to the bus.  Not before then!  Layer up…it will be chilly and we will be outside for some of our tours.  You may bring a ball cap to wear as it will be sunny and this can keep the sun out of your eyes.  Make sure you pack your lunch!  We will not be stopping by a fast food place to eat.  There will be NO vending machines where we are going so also bring yourself a drink.  Leave your back packs at school!  We are NOT going to the haunted house at Sloss so stop asking…LOL :-)   You may also bring a camera.  We will arrive back at school no later than 2:30.  I look forward to an interesting and fun field trip with you!
