Senator Cam Ward recently visited the new Science Lab at Calera Elementary School.

Calera Elementary has been awarded a $10,000 from the CarMax Foundation to purchase materials and supplies for a new Science Lab.  According to teacher Kristina Harper, the grant will be used to stock the Science Lab with furniture, eqiupment, and materials,

“The goal is to provide the lab with activities that will extend on our AMSTI (Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initative),” said Harper.

Harper wrote the grant after hearing about opportunity from her school’s PTO President.  After inquiring about grant, the school was visited at the end of last year by the Atlanta regional Manager for CarMax.

“At that point, he invited us to apply for the grant.  I worked over the summer getting all the information together, getting a budget written, and writing the grant, which was submitted in July. They informed me last week that we received the highest amount awarded.”

According to the organization’s website, the CarMax Foundation seeks to improve the communities in which their associates live and work. The organization award grants and provides support to high-quality programs managed by nonprofit organizations.  They support various educational endeavors, including those dealing with arts education; career exploration; drop-out prevention; literacy and language arts; school readiness programs; STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math); special needs; and tutoring/academic support.
