Students & Parents!!

Today I gave out invitations to our end of the year Scholars’ Bowl Party! All Scholars’ Bowl teams (6th, 7th, and 8th) will be attending a bowling party on Monday, March 7th, at Oak Mountain Bowling Lanes in Pelham. We need a couple of parent drivers to get our team members from HMS to the bowling alley right after school. Parents will be responsible for picking students up by 4:30pm. Please note the dollar amounts for both bowling and shoe rental and send money with your child accordingly.

After the end of WWII, the United States and the Soviet Union entered into a bitter rivalry which came to be called a “cold war”. It is to this “Cold War Era” that we will turn our attention over the next 2 weeks.

SCIENCE

We will continue our study of space, specifically our solar system, this week. Students will be heavily involved in math computations as we will work with “AU’s” which are astronomical units that scientists use to denote miles in space. Students will use these computations to create a scale drawing of our solar system. Pretty interesting stuff I must say!

In observance of Black History Month, our Social Studies classes will research a famous African American and create a plaque in their honor. This project will be completed here at school as we will be in the computer lab each day this week. The final project will be due from students during their class period on Friday.

SCIENCE
We will finish up our study of Chapter 19, “Earth, Moon, and Sun” this week. Students were given study guides in class on Tuesday, February 15th. Students will work on their study guides during class on Tuesday & Wednesday. Thursday, February 17th, we will check our study guide answers together during class to ensure accuracy and to clarify any misconceptions. Our test on Chapter 19 will be on Friday, February 18th. Students need to remember to bring their study guides with them to class Friday as I will take them up for a grade.

Students!! Remember we have a Science PowerUps quiz tomorrow, Friday, February 11th. Make sure you bring your PowerUps from January 4th all the way through today’s PowerUps, Thursday, February 10th. We will have PowerUps Friday during class and those will possibly be included on the quiz as well.

Wednesday, February 9th……….Students will complete all Key Terms for Chapter 27, Sections 1, 2, and 4. We are omitting Section 3 for now. These definitions should be completed in the student’s Social Studies notebook. THESE TERMS WILL BE TAKEN FOR A GRADE ON FRIDAY. As long as this work is completed by Friday, it does not matter if your student completes this Wednesday night or Thursday night.
This change was also made to our homework chart in our classroom.

SOCIAL STUDIES
Our study of World War II is finally drawing to a close as we consider the Battle of Midway, the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the Japanese surrender on August 15, 1945.

Our WWII EXAM will be given on WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9th!!
Students must bring their completed study guide to turn in with their exam. Please see our homework for the week below:

Monday, February 7th……….re-write study guide (question & answer) for #1 – #29. It is due Tuesday in class and it will be taken for a grade.

Tuesday, February 8th……….re-write study guide (question & answer) for #30- #43, including the island and city chart as well as the chart on the last page of the study guide. It is due in class Wednesday.

WOW! What an outstanding performance from our 6th grade Scholars’ Bowl team! This team came on strong with wins for our first 3 matches! HMS claimed victory in 5 out of the 8 matches we played today! Competition was tough and while we may not have brought home a trophy, you guys are all winners and represented your school well!
