Wednesday, November 30th

Students will be taking a gold test on Friday, Dec 2nd. The skills that will be assessed include Order of Operations (PEMDAS) and evaluating Algebraic Expressions with a given variable. A study guide was distributed today in class and students had ample time to complete most of it. I am going over the study guide in class on Thursday and I told students to have it completed so we could go over it together and check their procedures and answers!

Monday, November 28th

For the past few weeks, students have been evaluating numerical expressions to determine a solution. Today, students began evaluating algebraic expressions given a defined variable to determine a solution. Here are the notes students took down into their notebooks during class today:

After discussing these vocabulary terms and identifying examples of each, students practiced substituting in the value of the variable into easy expressions. Many examples were worked together in class to ensure students understand the procedures for solving these expressions.

EXTRA CREDIT Jack O’ Lantern graphs are due tomorrow, Nov 18th!!!!

Students were given a blank grid & ordered pair instruction sheets on Tuesday in an effort to allow them the majority of the week to work on these pictures in their spare time. They were also given plenty of time in class today to work on them as well. I cannot wait to see how creative everyone has been with these graphs!

In case you need them to finish up tonight, here are the grid & instructions one more time:

Wednesday, November 16th

Students were given the attached extra credit assignment on Tuesday. They have the opportunity to graph a Jack O’ Lantern and then dress the graph up by putting the pumpkin in a scene of their choosing! This extra credit will be due on Friday. We will vote for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners out of each class on Friday and then overall 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners on Monday when we return from our Thanksgiving Break!

Here’s a copy of the instructions & and a blank grid in case you need to download a new copy:

Monday, November 14th

Students are continuing their practice with Order of Operations. A multitude of problems were worked together during class today to ensure everyone understood the very specific steps I am requiring of all students to complete each problem. Students will be awarded points for their work tomorrow based on the following:

  • use of the PEMDAS checklist down the side of each problem
  • use of brackets on each step as they solve the problem
  • computation of the correct answer

See the following example on how to properly complete each homework problem:

Students not fulfilling all three requirements for homework will have points deducted from their homework score. Parents, please ensure your student shows all three components on each problem as they work this evening!

Tuesday, November 8th

Students continued to work on their calculations with exponents today in class. Homework tonight consists of a front & back sheet rewriting & calculating final values of exponents. I have told students they can certainly use calculators if they would like.
