We will have a chapter test covering chapter 15 section 4-5 & chapter 17 sections 3-4 on Friday, April 26th.

I hope each of you had a wonderful Easter weekend.  We will begin our study of Medieval Africa.  We will have a test on Medieval Africa on Friday, April 5th.  There will be no map test this week.  Your travelk brochure is due on Friday, April 5th also.  I will begin printing the brochures over the weekend.  If you need to complete the brochure you will need to do so during lunch intervention.

1. Describe how the African continent’s varied landscape gave rise to many diverse cultures.
2. Explain how the kingdoms in West Africa and East Africa developed centers of trade, where people exchanged a variety of goods and ideas.
3. Explain how the growth of empires led to centralized governments led by kings.
4. Discuss how traditional religions and Islam shaped African cultures.
5.  Describe how the Bantu migrations spread common ideas to much of  Africa.
6.  Discuss how the African slave trade disrupted African society and carried African peoples and cultures around the world.

This week we will complete our study on the Roman Civilization

Section 9-2 The Fall of Rome

1. Explain how poor leadership, a declining economy, and attacks by Germanic tribes weakened the Roman Empire during the A.D. 400s.
2. Discuss the many achievements in government, law, language, and the arts passed on by Rome.

Section 9-3 The Byzantine Empire,

1. Describe how the Eastern Roman, or Byzantine, Empire, which was based on Roman, Greek, and Christian ideas, grew rich and powerful as the Western Roman Empire fell.
2. Explain how the policies of Justinian and Theodora enabled the Byzantine Empire to survive for centuries.

This week in class we will continue our study of “The Rise of Rome”.  We will deal with the “Fall of the Republic” and the “Rise of the Empire”.

Objectives:
1.  Explain how the failure of the republic led to the creation of a Roman   Empire.

2.  Relate how military and political reforms made Rome rich and prosperous.

3.  Describe how Julius Caesar seized power, but was later killed by his rivals.

4.  Explain how the Roman Republic, weakened by civil wars, became an empire under Augustus.

5.  Explain how Augustus’ military and political reforms brought an era of peace and prosperity.

6.  Discuss how Rome’s roads, aqueducts, ports, and common currency made the empire.

This week our emphasis will turn to Rome.  We will begin our study of the Roman Civilization this week.  This study will be a three week unit.  This week we will discuss “The Rise of Rome”.

OBJECTIVES

1.  Explain how Rome became a republic.

2. Explain how Rome’s geographic location aided its rise to power.

3.  Discuss how the Romans created a republic and carried out conquests.

4. Describe how Rome gained control of the Mediterranean region.

5.  Discuss how Rome’s republic was shaped by a struggle between wealthy landowners and regular citizens.

6.  Describe how Rome defeated the Carthaginians and took control of the Mediterranean area.

I hope each of you had a wonderful and restful holiday weekend.   Because of the delayed start on school last week we will have the Ancient Greece map test on THURSDAY, JANUARY 24TH.

This week we will continue our study on Greece.  Our emphasis this week will be the Greek Civilization particularly the aspect of culture, philosophy, and history.   

We will have a chapter test on Friday, January 25th on Chapter 5 Sections 1-2. The study guide for the Chapter 5 Sections 1-2 Test will be posted on Thursday. The note guide, map, and map list links are posted below.

 Objectives:

     1. Explain how Greek poetry and fables taught Greek values.
     2. Describe how Greek art and architecture expressed Greek ideas of beauty and harmony.

This week we will continue our study of Ancient Greece. Our study will deal with Chapter 4 Section 3-4; Persia attacks the Greeks and The Age of Pericles.

Our objectives this week are as follows;

1. Discuss how the Persian Empire united a wide area under a single government.
2. Describe how Sparta and Athens joined forces to defeat the Persians.

3.  Discuss how Athens became very powerful and more democratic.
4.  Describe what happened when Athens and Sparta went to war over control of Greece.

5.  Identify the causes and effects of Greek wars with Persia;
6.  Describe Athens under the leadership of Pericles and reasons Athens  declined.

This week we will begin our study of Ancient Greece.  This week we will cover sections 1 & 2 of chapter 4 in our text book.  Our class objectives for this week will be the following.

1. Describe how geography and the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations influenced Greek culture.
2. Explain how the geography of Greece’s early civilizations, the Minoans and the Mycenaeans.
3. Describe how colonies and trade spread Greek culture, which included the idea of citizenship.
4. Compare the city-states of Sparta and Athens.
5. Describe how tyrants seized control over many city-states.
6. Explain how the Spartans focused on military rule, while the Athenians were more interested in democracy.
