Biology Syllabus

Course Description: Biology is a required, inquiry-based course focused on providing all high school students with foundational life science content about the patterns, processes, and interactions among living organisms.
Purpose: The course is designed to include scientific knowledge emphasizing in-depth the study of the strands of structure and function of living systems while viewing diversity, adaptation, heredity, and reproduction of organisms and the study of their environments.
Materials: Students will need the following materials: Notebooks, College rule paper, Blue/Black pen, Pencil, Folder, Color Pencils, and Markers. Students are required to bring their Textbooks, Journals, Notebooks, and Writing Utensils daily!
Fees: All students are asked to pay a $15.00 science fee.
Assessments: Quizzes, Homework, Classwork, Class Participation, Notebook Check, Notebook Test, Lab Assignments, News Article Summaries, Journals/ Bell Ringers, and Reports/Projects
Grading Procedures: To Communicate your progress to your parents/guardians, a progress report will be issued at the end of 4 ½ weeks and a report card will be issued at the end of the nine week period.
All points for assignments and tests will be totaled at the end of the grading period. There are usually three to five chapter test administered during a nine weeks period in addition to the other forms of assessments listed above.
The nine week grades will reflect a variety of formal and informal assessments. Gold Assignments (60%) – consist of test, announced quizzes, notebooks, journals, & nine week projects. Silver assignments (30%) – consist of group projects, news articles, & homework assignments. Bronze (10%) – consist of daily work, pop quizzes, etc…
At the end of the 1st and 3rd nine weeks, a comprehensive assessment may be administered to all biology students. This assessment will count as a major test grade. At the end of the 2nd and 4th nine weeks, a semester exam will be given. This assessment will be 20% of their grade.
Make up work: Test may be made up only if the student has an Excused absence. The student will be expected to make up the test as soon as he/she returns to school. It is board policy that within three days of the return from an absence The Student should arrange with the teacher to make up missed assignments.
Classroom Rules:
- Be on time. 2. Be prepared for class (bring textbook, journal, notebook, black/ blue pen).
- Do not get out of your seat with out permission. 4. Be courteous and respectful of others so that you do not hinder the learning process. 5. Do not touch items that do not belong to you (the teachers desk and chairs are off limits). 6. Abide by the dress code. 7. Turn homework in at the beginning of class. 8. No profanity. 9. The bell does not dismiss you; I do. 10. Place only the necessary materials for class on your desk. 11. No cell phone usage in class. Cell phone usage without permission will lead to the cell phone being confiscated. The Cell Phone will be returned the following school day.
Consequences: School –wide discipline for class one violations
*1st time- student conference after class
*2nd time- parent contact (email, note, or phone call)
*3rd time- assigned detention by teacher
Class one violations include but are not limited to: Dress code, No materials/Not prepared for class, class disturbances, sleeping in class, lack of cooperation, chronic tardiness, and violation of classroom rules. Continuation of class-one violations automatically become class-two violations and will result in intervention by the office. Class two violations include Hats, nuisance items such as ipods, cd-players, cards, etc., Defiance, Disrespect, Obscene Language or Materials, Vandalism.
