Sports Medicine Team

INJURY PROTOCOL at Helena High School:

Hopefully your student-athlete will never be faced with an injury.  The injury protocol below will be followed in the event he or she is injured.  Please communicate with your Helena High School Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC).

  1. ATC will assess the injury and communicate with you, the guardian which course of action to take regarding injury.
  2. If ATC needs to refer to our team physician at Andrews Sports Medicine, we can fast-track the student-athlete on the day of injury.  Dr. Ricardo Colberg, Primary Care at Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopedics Center (205) 939-3699.
  3. With COMMUNICATION the guardian, ATC, coach, and doctor will all be on the same page.
  4. There will be an ATC at Helena High School each morning at 7:00 a.m. to provide treatment and rehabilitation to all injured athletes.

Michael Shields, M.Ed, LAT, ATC

Health Science Teacher / Athletic Trainer

Michael Shields is an Athletic Trainer at Helena High School.  Michael attended Georgia Southern University, where he earned a B.S. in Athletic Training and Exercise Science.  In 2010, Michael earned his Masters in Education from the University of West Alabama.  He taught Sports Medicine for two years at the University of West Alabama before coming to Helena High School.

Gina Gonzales, MAEd, LAT, ATC

Health Science Teacher / Athletic Trainer

Gina Gonzales is an Athletic Trainer at Helena High School.  She earned her B.S. in Kinesiology/Athletic Training from Louisiana State University.  In 2012, Gina obtained her Masters degree in Education/Exercise Physiology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in addition to serving as a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer at Samford University.  Gina is excited to be a part of the Helena Husky Family!

Ricardo E. Colberg, MD

Sports Medicine and Non-surgical Orthopaedic Physician

Ricardo Colberg is a sports medicine and non-surgical orthopaedic physician at Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center.  He is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Registered Musculoskeletal Sonographer.
