Throwback Friday
It was Blackout Day, the rare day on Earth when there was darkness all the day long.
Once every seven years, the sun was blocked by Pluto. The students at Columbiana Elementary were so excited. None of them, except Rylee had ever seen total darkness.
Rylee was different, to say the least. Once upon a time, she’d lived on Mars, at the top of White Boot Mountain with her sister Hannah. Hannah, an interstellar princess, moved to earth when Rylee was young. The earthlings hated Rylee because she was royalty.
All the day long, the kids speculated what darkness would look like. When the moment arrived near high noon, they were in an argument with Rylee. One of the meanest girls, Lily, stuffed Rylee into a closet. Well, she tried but she wasn’t that strong. Plus, she realized when she opened the closet door that there was a heating/cooling unit taking up most of the space.
“What do we do about Rylee?” Lily said as Rylee ran out the door.
“I say we club her,” Abbey said. Abbey pulled a bat out. Obviously, she was a severely troubled child.
“Whatever we do, we need to split up and get this done before total darkness,” Avery, the intelligent one, opined.
The group agreed and quickly went to work. Unfortunately, none of them wore watches, none of them were good with time, and so total darkness hit shortly into their hunt. For many hours, they roamed the school, opening doors and checking hallways for Rylee.
When they’d finally given up, Rylee walked through the front door.
“Hi guys, that was pretty awesome,” she said as she walked in with her official Glo-Stick Total Darkout Day brand.
“What in the name of Alex did we just miss?” Emmy said.
The group never knew. But they plotted revenge on Rylee…
Flashback Friday
by Mayfield
I’ve had this Friday before.
It’s all the same.
The weariness at the start
the weariness at the end.
The promise of a weekend.
The accomplishments of the week.
What did I gain?
A tiredness that came from
the accomplishments of nothing,
small pebbles tossed off
the path you believe
you’re making smooth.
The path looks the same as
before though,
and you feel like you’ve been
here last Friday and most
Fridays before
and if you were honest
you see future Fridays
looking the same.
If you have heart
and you do
grab a pebble and keep going.
