so reading update…
“how star wars conquered the universe” – finished the book last week – it was a great, great read – very enjoyable – even through the prequels – i now know why they were so bad:) just a great book on the creative process
“why olga runs” – or something like that – basically, there’s a 95-year-old woman who wins age group awards by the truckload – and so the book was a bit about her – but more about the aging process – and how we can fight it – or what we can do about it – like most books in this genre, there weren’t secrets or short cuts – i think mainly i just enjoyed reading about how blessed someone that old would be to get to still be active
no journals this week – don’t even try:)
Scholar’s Bowl recap
On Saturday at a way too early hour, while the polar caps melted away, a bunch of North Alabama schools traveled hundreds of thousands of centimeters by bus to central Alabama for a Scholar’s Bowl tournament.
Thompson, who had apparently upset all the other 5,000 closer schools who blew the event off, served as host. Well, they hosted in word, but they didn’t do much that you’d expect from a host. For starters, they tried to sabotage Columbiana’s team by confusing its star, Hope, into going to the intermediate school.
The tournament, in heavy foreshadowing, began late because the front parking lot of the school had to be cleared for some odd reason – the parents fled to relocate their cars because they knew Alabaster was serious about money and would tow in a heartbeat.
Once started, the first round was Oak Park vs. CMS. After last year’s 300-point quarterfinal loss, CMS was more than ready to proclaim a moral victory after winning question No. 1 20-10. OF course ,Oak Park went on to outscore Columbiana by 130, but CMS had doubled its point total from last year by the end. For a while, #WhoNeedsBilly was trending on the internet.
CMS continued to roll Round 2 by actually winning – this time against Gadsden. In the match, Skylar made her debut, showing off impressive knowledge of Hurricane Katrina and the uvula. One of the more interesting questions in the round was to complete a sing-along to Woody Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land,” which, honestly, is really all Donald Trump’s been saying for quite some time. If there are dibs to be called, dibs should be called on “Scholar’s Bowl: The Musical,” with sing-alongs all three periods (even the worksheets – there could be a choral/harmony bonus).
With their win secure, CMS refused to run up the score, leaving the last five questions and all of their bonuses untouched. The trend continued in Round 3 though, and that led Hartselle to steal away a win. With the Wildcats up by 15 going into the last round, neither team got anything right for the next four questions. Hartselle got three of the last four questions right to win by 25. Sklyar blamed the loss on Harry Potter as the wrong bonuses were tied to her Harry Potter question – some obscure politicians like former president Bill Clinton and U.S. Senator and POW survivor John McCain who wrote books – and tying Hans Christian Anderson to patronuses.
Skylar’s patronus, a Christmas Star Wars sweater, went out from her during the round – and bad sign for times to come…
