Zachary Ying & The Dragon Emperor

by Xian Jay Zhao

Zachary Ying never had many opportunities to learn about his Chinese heritage. His single mom was busy enough making sure they got by, and his schools never taught anything except Western history and myths. So Zack is woefully unprepared when he discovers he was born to host the spirit of the First Emperor of China for a vital mission: sealing the leaking portal to the Chinese underworld before the upcoming Ghost Month blows it wide open.

The mission takes an immediate wrong turn when the First Emperor botches his attempt to possess Zackā€™s body and binds to Zackā€™s AR gaming headset instead, leading to a battle where Zackā€™s momā€™s soul gets taken by demons. Now, with one of historyā€™s most infamous tyrants yapping in his headset, Zack must journey across China to heist magical artifacts and defeat figures from history and myth, all while learning to wield the emperorā€™s incredible water dragon powers.

And if Zack canā€™t finish the mission in time, the spirits of the underworld will flood into the mortal realm, and he could lose his mom forever.

OCDaniel

by Wesley King

Daniel is the back-up punter for the Erie Hills Elephants. Which really means heā€™s the water boy. He spends football practice perfectly arranging water cupsā€”and hoping no one notices. Actually, he spends most of his time hoping no one notices his strange habitsā€”he calls them Zaps: avoiding writing the number four, for example, or flipping a light switch on and off dozens of times over. He hopes no one notices that heā€™s crazy, especially his best friend Max, and Raya, the prettiest girl in school. His life gets weirder when another girl at school, who is unkindly nicknamed Psycho Sara, notices him for the first time. She doesnā€™t just notice him: she seems to peer through him.

Then Daniel gets a note: ā€œI need your help,ā€ it says, signed, Fellow Star Childā€”whatever that means. And suddenly Daniel, a total no one at school, is swept up in a mystery that might change everything for him.

With great voice and grand adventure, this book is about feeling different and finding those who understand.

Red Queen

by Victoria Aveyard

The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change.

That is until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power.

Fearful of Mare’s potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime.

But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous danceā€”Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart.

Every Other Weekend

Abigail Johnson

This book takes a hard look at the different ways families can exist and survive. Jolene’s parents are truly divorced. Jolene’s Dad cheated and she spends every other weekend at her Dad’s. On the other hand, Adam’s parents are separated, but not divorced. Their is no legal lawyers involved, just a mutual decision by his parents to take a break and see what happens. He goes to his Dad’s every other weekend. It just happened that they are in the same apartment buildling every two weeks for 48 hours. Every Other Weekend switches point of view between Jolene and Adam each chapter. I enjoyed watching the same situation unfold from two separate view points. There are heavier themes touched on during the story and is a true YA book.

When Adam Moynihanā€™s oldest brother died, his life fell apart around him. Now his mom cries constantly, he and his remaining brother canā€™t talk without fighting, and the father he always admired moved out when they needed him most.

Jolene Timber is used to being a pawn in her divorced parentsā€™ war. But when she develops an unlikely friendship with a boy who spends every other weekend in the same apartment building that she does, suddenly the future seems less bleak.

Can the boy who thinks forgiveness makes him weak and the girl who thinks love is for fools find something real together? Theyā€™ll find outā€¦every other weekend.

Tiger’s Curse Saga

by Colleen Houck

I very much enjoyed this series! The books have a love triangle as strong as the Twilight series and adventures/quests as wild & mystical as Pirates of the Carribean. If you like books & movies such as Twilight, the Cinder series, Hunger Games, Percy Jackson, Pirates of the Carribean, etc… this is a series you need to read. It’s the perfect mix of adventure/epic quest, curses and small magic, and romance The books overall take place in Indian and follow the lore & mythology of India, delving into Indian temples & ruins. Below are the titles and covers for all 4 books!

Would you risk it all to change your destiny? The last thing Kelsey Hayes thought she’d be doing this summer was trying to break a 300-year old Indian curse. With a mysterious white tiger named Ren. Halfway around the world.
But that’s exactly what happened.
Face-to-face with dark forces, spellbinding magic, and mystical worlds where nothing is what it seems, Kelsey risks everything to piece together an ancient prophecy that could break the curse forever.

by Nicole Panteleakos

Twelve-year-old Nova is eagerly awaiting the launch of the space shuttle Challenger–it’s the first time a teacher is going into space, and kids across America will watch the event on live TV in their classrooms. Nova and her big sister, Bridget, share a love of astronomy and the space program. They planned to watch the launch together. But Bridget has disappeared, and Nova is in a new foster home.

While foster families and teachers dismiss Nova as severely autistic and nonverbal, Bridget understands how intelligent and special Nova is, and all that she can’t express. As the liftoff draws closer, Nova’s new foster family and teachers begin to see her potential, and for the first time, she is making friends without Bridget. But every day, she’s counting down to the launch, and to the moment when she’ll see Bridget again. Because Bridget said, “No matter what, I’ll be there. I promise.”

Project Hail Mary

Andy Weir

I whole heartedly enjoy Andy Weir’s The Martian book and the movie. The book goes into a great deal of science to explain how plausible traveling to Mars and surviving could actually be. It’s also a very comedic/sarcastic book, and Project Hail Mary continues that vibe! This book tends to focus more on the physics side of science & truly goes more science fiction than The Martian does. I still enjoyed it a lot and the book holds a big twist in the middle of the story! This is an adult book and does contain some language, but not as much as The Martian. If you are looking for a good sci-fi, this is a great choice!

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission – and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish.

Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.

All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, he realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Alone on this tiny ship that’s been cobbled together by every government and space agency on the planet and hurled into the depths of space, it’s up to him to conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.

And thanks to an unexpected ally, he just might have a chance.

Part scientific mystery, part dazzling interstellar journey,Ā Project Hail MaryĀ is a tale of discovery, speculation, and survival to rivalĀ The MartianĀ – while taking us to places it never dreamed of going.
