The Week of April 24-28 Announcements

*Tomorrow there will be a MMS Chess Tournament for the Montevallo Community beginning at 8:30 am.  Please come out and support the chess students in Montevallo.

*There will be a meeting for all interested 8th grade parents who want to help with the 8th grade end of the year celebration (cookout) Tuesday night at MMS at 6pm in the Media Center.

*Auditions for the Talent Show will be on Thursday, May 4th. The cost is $5.00 to audition.

*Upcoming MMS events include:  Friday, May 12th will be the Yearbook Signing Party for $2.00. The LOT Graduation Dinner is on May 18th, the MMS Talent Show will be on May 18th, the 8th grade Cookout will be on Friday, May 19th, Awards Day will be on May 22nd, the new LOT member induction will be on Monday, May 22nd, the Spring Fling will be on May 23rd, and the Faculty Student Game will be on May 24th.

*The MMS Band will have its final Band Concert on Tuesday, May 9th, at6:30pm at MHS.

*Shelby County Schools will be using a program called SchoolMint for completing registration forms for next school year.  Your child should have brought home a letter with instructions on how you can begin completing these new online forms. Each child has been assigned a unique Code that you will need when setting up your SchoolMint account. Please remember to ask your child for the letter. If it becomes lost, please contact the school’s registrar.

 

*Summer Mural Camp:  University of Montevallo, in partnership with the Montevallo Arts Council, is excited to bring back Mural Camp for students who are entering 5th through 12th grades and are interested in creating art in a community setting. *The National Science Foundation and the National Security Agency have funded a camp to introduce students to the critical issue of cybersecurity. Please share this opportunity with your teachers and your students. Please note that there is no charge to attend this camp. There are four camps which will all take place on the campus of The University of Alabama in Huntsville from 8-5 PM. The schedule for camps is

*Announcements:

*If you would like to apply to be a Peer Helper next year, please get a packet from the office or Mrs. Green.  Packets must be completed and returned to Mrs. Green by today.

*Any 6th or 7th grader that is interested in attending soccer workouts in May that has not received a packet, please see Mrs. Thomas.  Packets must be turned in prior to workouts and are due today. Workouts will be every Monday and Wednesday in May.

*8th Grade students who want to apply for the Upward Bound Program need to get their application packets completed and turned into Mrs. Lusco asap. She has to turn them in to the University of Montevallo.

*Today we will be on COTS schedule.  If you owe make up work, you will be assigned Intervention COTS.

*Today the 8th grade will be visiting Montevallo High School in two half day sessions.

*Today is the last day to order yearbooks at $30.00.  Next week they will be $35.00.

*Tomorrow there will be a MMS Chess Tournament for all students and community members.  The Chess Competition begins at 8:30am.

*Next Thursday there will be auditions for the MMS Talent Show.  The cost for auditioning is $5.00.

*There will be no lunch charges beginning May 1st.  If you order extra you will have to pay cash immediately.

*Elective sheets for next year need to be turned into your 4th period teacher by today.  If you choose year long FCCLA, you will be required to be in the FCCLA club.  If you choose year long computers, you will need to be in the FBLA club.  If you do not turn in a sheet, Mrs. Lusco will choose your elective for you and you will not be able to change your elective.

*Twelve students from each grade level have been selected to participate in a Keyboarding Challenge for fast and accurate typing skills. If you received a letter Thursday afternoon in your 7th period class, please come to the library on Wednesday morning, May 3rd, to participate in this Typing Agent competition, when your grade level is announced. Our school will be competing with other middle schools in Shelby County.  The school with the fastest, most accurate scores will receive $6,000 in technology funding.  Individual prizes will be given to the top 3 typists per grade level.  Teachers, please check your email for a list of these students, and please allow them to make up their work

*Congratulations to the student of the week:  Cody Curl .  He was nominated by Mrs. Burns.

Cody demonstrated the character trait of service to others. One day in PE class, he gave another student his “Fidget Cube” so that boy would have something different in class to keep his hands busy.  He said he would just give it the boy to keep even though it cost money.  Mrs Burns stated that Cody is a very thoughtful young man.

This Weeks Announcements

*Progress Reports go home today.  If you have any concerns about your child’s grades, please call the school and schedule an appointment.  Coming home with the progress reports is a letter from Shelby County Schools about the new School Mint Program.

*Shelby County Schools will be using a program called SchoolMint for completing registration forms for next school year. Today your child should be bringing home a letter with instructions on how you can begin completing these new online forms. Each child has been assigned a unique Code that you will need when setting up your SchoolMint account. Please remember to ask your child for the letter. If it becomes lost, please contact the school’s registrar.

*MMS Girl’s basketball tryouts will be April, 24th – 27th.  Students must have a current physical form to try out.

*8th grade students attended the Upward Bound Presentation and received an application packet.  This college preparation program is available for students whose parents did not graduate from a 4 year college or university or who qualify based on income level.   The Upward Bound packets will need to be returned to Mrs. Lusco  by Tuesday, April 25th.  Parents must sign all of the forms in the packet.

*The Yearbooks are still on sale for $30.00. In May, the cost goes up to $35.00.

Happy Birthday:

*Announcements:

* MMS volleyball tryouts will be today after school and Girl’s basketball tryouts will be next week April, 24th – 27th.

*Current 8th graders who are interested in trying out for high school basketball will have tryouts today and tomorrow at MHS from 3:15-5:00.  You must have the high school tryout packet completed and a physical before tryouts.

*7th Graders will test with the Aspire test today and tomorrow. Also the 6 Band students attending the Chicago trip will test today and tomorrow.  8th graders will test on Thursday and Friday. There will be no cell phones or smart watches allowed in the testing rooms at all.  Students testing will not need to bring anything to the testing room.

*Tomorrow 8th graders will have an Upward Bound Presentation at 2pm in the Cafeteria.

*The field trip for FBLA to CTS/Bud’s Best cookies is today. Students who have turned in their form and money should meet Mrs. Thomas in the lobby by the front office at 10:00

*The 6th graders will be on a field trip tomorrow the Space Center in Huntsville. Students going on the trip must be at MMS  in front of the gym at or before 6am. The bus will leave by 6:15am.  You can bring snacks but no gum, candy, sunflower seeds.  Lunch will be provided at the Space Center. Make sure you are in dress code and wear tennis shoes.  Parents will need to pick up students between 5:15 and 5:45pm in the front of the school.
