*Character Education Theme for the Week: African American Spotlight: Ernest Green born in 1941 was one of the Little Rock Nine, a group of African-Americanstudents who, in 1957, were the first black students ever to attend classes at Little Rock Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Green was the first African-American to graduate from the school in 1958. In 1999, he and the other members of the Little Rock Nine were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal by President Bill Clinton.

*Character Education Theme for the Week: African American Spotlight: Garrett Morgan was born in Kentucky in 1877.  Morgan is the inventor of something many utilize everyday, the traffic signal. He created this after witnessing so many accidents on busy urban intersections. In addition to this, he created the gas mask which grew in popularity when it was used to aid workers after an underground explosion.

*Character Education Theme for the Week: African American Spotlight: Fredrick Douglas was born a slave in the year 1818 and escaped when he was twenty years old. He was nationally known as an anti-slavery activist, who spoke against slavery all over the country before and during the Civil War. He died in 1895.

*Character Education Theme for the Week: African American Spotlight: Ruby Bridges was born on September 8, 1954. She was the first African American child to desegregate an all white school in New Orleans, Louisiana while she was just six years old. She was spit on, gotten food thrown at her, and verbally abused but she kept going. She changed the schooling system for kids of all races come together and be educated.

*Character Education Theme for the Week: African American Spotlight: Jack Roosevelt JackieRobinson born on January 31, 1919 died on October 24, 1972 was an American professional baseball second baseman who became the first African American to play in Major League Baseball (MLB) in the modern era.

*Character Education Theme for the Week: African American Spotlight: Harriet Tubman was born in Maryland in 1820 and was an American abolitionist, humanitarian, and an armed scout and spy for the United States Army during the American Civil War. She led 300 slaves out of slavery. She died in 1913.

*Character Education Theme for the Week: African American Spotlight: Guy Bluford became the first African American in space on Aug. 30, 1983, aboard the Challenger on NASA’s eight space shuttle mission (STS-8). Guion “Guy” Bluford is a former NASA astronaut who was the first African-American to fly into space. He flew four shuttle missions.

*Character Education Theme for the Week: African American History Spotlight: Sarah Breedlove was born in 1867.  You may not recognize that name because she was more famous as Madam CJ Walker.  Walker was an African American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and a political and social activist.  She developed a line of beauty products for African American women and became “the world’s most successful female entrepreneur of her time,” and one of the most successful African-American business owners ever.  When Madam CJ Walker died in 1919, she was considered the wealthiest African American woman in America.

*Character Education Theme for the Week: African American History Spotlight: Dr. Condeleeza Rice was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1954.  She grew up in the midst of the Civil Rights Era and faced discrimination personally.  Dr. Rice received her PhD in political science and later became the first African American female Secretary of State under President George Bush.  Today Condi Rice is a professor at Stanford and serves on the College Football Playoff Committee.

*Character Education Theme for the Week: African American History Spotlight: Olympic legend, Jesse Owens was born in 1913 in Oakville, Alabama.  He entered the 1936 Olympics, which were held in Nazi Germany amidst the belief by Hitler that the Games would support his belief that the German “Aryan” people were the dominant race.  Jesse would prove them wrong by winning an astonishing four gold medals in Track and Field, affirming that individual excellence, rather than race or national origin, distinguishes one man from another.  Jesse Owens died in Arizona in 1980.
