Black History Fact for Today:  In 1920, Fritz Pollard and Bobby Marshall became the first Black athletes to play in the NFL. Pollard was also the league’s first Black coach.

• Volleyball tryouts are the first week of April and basketball the second week of April! There will be a parent meeting for both volleyball and basketball on Wednesday the 12th in the gym at 5pm

Black History Fact for Today:  Agricultural scientist George Carver was responsible for creating over 500 new products made from peanuts and sweet potatoes, including cooking oils, paint, and soap.

Black History Fact for Today:  James McCune Smith was the first African American person to earn a medical degree. He also started the nation’s first pharmacy under Black ownership, and was the first African American to have their work published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.

Black History Fact for Today:  After years of remarkable work as an attorney, Thurgood Marshall became the first African American to serve in the U.S. Supreme Court. Officially nominated by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1967, he served as a justice until 1991.

• Reminder, bells will be turned off today and for the remainder of the week due to ACCESS Testing
• Any 7th or 8th grade girls interested in playing soccer please see Mrs.Martinez or Mrs.Serrano.

Black History Fact for Today:   Alice Walker, The esteemed writer, activist and poet was the first Black woman novelist to win a Pulitzer Prize for Literature and the National Book Award for her third novel, The Color Purple. The novel, which centers on the life of African-American women living in the South in the 1930s, was later adapted into a film by Steven Spielberg in 1985, starring Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover and Oprah Winfrey. It was also made into a Tony award-winning Broadway musical, which debuted in 2004.

Black History Fact for Today:   Langston Hughes; The award-winning poet went on to create a large body of highly influential work — including several novels, short stories and plays — that highlighted portrayals of Black life in America during the 20s to the 60s. Some of his most famous poems are Let America Be America Again , I, Too, and Harlem.
