About XC

Thank you for wanting to be a part of the Oak Mountain Middle School cross country team.  I know this sport may be new to most of you so hold on this is going to be fun!

A little about cross country…

Our season officially begins on the first Tuesday of school in August and runs through the last part of October.  Once school starts we practice 3 days a week.  These practices are mandatory and failure to attend may result in suspension from the first meet.

Typically our meets are on Saturdays and there may be 1 or 2 during the week. For more information view the tab entitled OMMS XC SCHEDULE for a look at this season's schedule.

A little about the meets...

Everyone runs in every meet including championships - there is no bench in cross country!

Meets are fun and exciting.  Once you experience your first meet you will be hooked.  There will be separate races for boys and girls.  Both 7th & 8th grade runners will run and compete together.  The typical distance for a middle school race is 2 miles, whereas high school runners run a 5K.

Scoring is a bit different in that the lowest team score wins.  Points will be given to the top 7 runners on each team.  The overall winner of the race earns 1 point for their team, the 2nd runner earns 2 points, and so on.  The team score will be the combined points of the top 5 runners.  Points for the 6th & 7th runner are used for breaking any tie.

Our coaching philosophy focuses on each runner's improvement from one meet to the next, not how many points they score for the team.  When a runner improves their meet time, we all win!
