Shelby County Community Education Offering Adult Carpentry, Automotive and Welding Courses

Shelby County Community Education will be offering three classes for adults starting February 2.  The classes offered include a basic residential carpentry certificate program, automotive technology, and welding.  All classes will be held at the Shelby County College and Career Center on Highway 70 in Columbiana.

Carpentry will be offered as a FREE eight-week course for adult learners needing basic knowledge and skills in the residential carpentry field. The course is being offered in conjunction with the Alabama Homebuilders Association Foundation.  Beginning on February 2 and ending on March 24, the class will meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

The course will cover basic construction tools; safety; reading a tape measure; basic construction site layout; reading blueprints; floor, wall, roof and ceiling framing; cutting rafters; window and door installation; siding and exterior trim; interior trim and finishes; and stairs.

Each class will provide time for classroom instruction/theory and hands-on time in the shop lab.  Students completing the course requirements will receive NCCER credits as well as a certificate of completion from the Home Builders Association of Alabama.

The carpentry class will be limited to 15 students, so registration materials need to be completed and submitted as quickly as possible.

Welding is open to beginners and those who have taken classes and would like more advanced training. Students may choose to learn Oxy fuel cutting and Shielded Metal Arc Welding or Oxy fuel cutting and Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG or wire welding).

Welding will also meet Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6:00-8:00 p.m. February 2-March 24. Students must be 18 or older and are asked to wear a long sleeve shirt or jacket and work boots to class. The cost for the welding course is $280 payable to Community Education, plus a $100 supply fee payable to the Shelby County College and Career Center.

Automotive Technology is open to beginners who are interested in learning the basics of automotive maintenance and repair.  The course will cover oil changes; tire repair, replacement and balance; routine maintenance and minor repairs; automotive safety; proper tools; and vehicle inspections. The course will meet on Tuesday nights from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., February 2 through March 22.

Students must be 18 or older, and may bring their own vehicles to work on.  The cost of the program is $125.00 payable to Community Education and $20.00 supply fee payable to the Shelby County College and Career Center.
