Administrators Approved by the Board of Education

The Shelby County Board of Education approved the new principal for Helena Elementary School, as well as the new assistant principal for Oak Mountain Elementary and a new system assistant principal.

Mary Anderson

Mary Anderson will serve as the new principal of Helena Elementary School. Ms. Anderson has over sixteen years of experience in public education and most recently served as assistant principal at Chelsea Park Elementary School. Prior to that, Ms. Anderson was principal in the Cleveland School District in Mississippi. Anderson earned a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Delta State University.

Jan Curtis will serve as the new assistant principal of Oak Mountain Elementary School. Ms. Curtis has over fifteen years of experience in education and currently serves as an administrative assistant for Shelby County Schools.  She earned a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and a master’s degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education and in Instructional Leadership from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Kara Burleson will serve as the system assistant principal and will be assigned to Helena Intermediate School for the 2020-2021 school year.  Ms. Burleson has over sixteen years of experience in public education and currently serves as the assistant principal at Helena Elementary School.  Ms. Burleson earned a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Auburn University, along with a master’s degree in Elementary Education and Instructional Leadership from the University of Montevallo.
