Board Approves Assistant Principals for Helena Intermediate and Oak Mountain Elementary

The Shelby County Board of Education approved Dr. Lewis Brook’s recommendations for new assistant principals for Helena Intermediate and Oak Mountain Elementary during the February board meeting. Brandon Byars will serve at Helena Intermediate and Cynthia Monroe will serve at Oak Mountain Elementary.

Byars has served as a physical education teacher for Shelby County Schools for 11 years and Arab City Schools for three years.  Currently, Byars is in his fifth year teaching at Helena Intermediate. He has also coached football, baseball, basketball, and soccer.

Byars graduated from Thompson High School.  He received his Bachelors of Science in Physical Education from Auburn University and he completed his Masters of Education in Physical Education from the University of West Alabama.  Most recently, he completed his Masters of Education in Instructional Leadership from the University of Montevallo.  

Monroe has over 16 years of experience as an educator. She taught at Chalkville Elementary for 11 years and then at Calera Intermediate School for three years before becoming a district reading coach. 

Monroe graduated from UAB with a Bachelor’s in Early Childhood/Elementary Education.  She earned master’s degrees in School Counseling and in Instructional Leadership from the University of West Alabama
