Several Shelby County students were recently honored for their artwork at the Visual Arts Achievement Program (VAAP) competition at the University of Montevallo. Sara Grace Bezkor and Sarah Helu, from Oak Mountain High School, and Lauren Underwood from Pelham High School, competed at the district level against students from Shelby County, Hoover, and Vestavia Hills in the VAAP Art Show.
They submitted pieces in the painting classification and brought home the only two awards offered for their classification. Helu got an honorable mention for her submission. Bezkor won first place for her painting, which has now been sent to hang in the Alabama Artist Gallery Exhibit in Montgomery from April 1-25 where it will compete at the state level. Underwood also won first place for her submission in the photography category. It will also hang on display in Montgomery and will compete in the state competition.
