Pelham High School Students Give Back to Community

Students from all over Shelby County attended the first annual Shelby County Schools High School Leadership Conference in the fall. John Milton, teacher and SGA sponsor at Oak Mountain High School lead his students in the fundraising and organization of the conference. During the conference, all the high school participants were commissioned to give back to their communities. The service initiative was given a title, We Give Back.

LEAD TWENTY was chartered at Pelham High School from the group of 20 students selected by faculty and staff to attend the leadership conference in the fall. According to Shelly Johnson, 11th grade counselor at PHS, It is now an established leadership mentoring group, meeting multiple times per week for various activities.

LEAD TWENTY recently organized two community service days, a day to benefit each of the cities currently served by PHS.  On Saturday, May 3, members and their recruited volunteers helped Helena prepare for the Buck Creek Festival by picking up trash in the Buck Creek area, as well as along the main roads in the Old Town area. They then moved to Orr Park to finish their day.

On Saturday, May 10, members and recruited volunteers cleaned up the campus of PHS. The group did not allow the rain to stop them, as they picked up approximately 30 large bags of trash throughout the campus. Both days of service revealed an embodiment of student leadership and a reason to take pride in the strong citizens our communities are raising.
