Members of the University of Montevallo women’s soccer program recently spent the day volunteering at Montevallo Middle School, assisting with the school’s Clubs, Organizations, and Teams (COTs) focus.
University of Montevallo’s assistant women’s soccer coach, Emma Greenwood, contacted MMS Principal Shelia Lewis with the idea of the soccer team helping out in some way at the Montevallo area schools.
“She stated that as a team they wanted to be more involved in the community,” Lewis said. “These young ladies came and helped with the school’s COTs. They played football with the sports club, decorated cookies, took pictures with the photography group, and helped to make smoothies. They enjoyed interacting with the students and plan to return next month.”
Lewis said each student at MMS belongs to a COT and teachers serve as sponsors. Students identify their top three COT choices during the first week of school and the school counselor makes every effort to ensure that each student gets to participate in at least one of his or her choices.
COT meetings take place the last Friday of each month. The COT list includes chess, archery, boys intramurals, cookie decorating, smoothies, book club, photography, games strategy, origami, anime, FBLA, FCCLA, JUNA, weather, sports club, wrestling, writer’s corner, environmental, and Random Acts of Kindness.
“ We always receive so much support from the university,” stated Mrs. Lewis. “UM is a valuable resource for the schools in Montevallo. The women soccer team showed so much enthusiasm and patience with our students. They really made our first COT of the year special. We can’t thank them enough.”
