Shelby County Board of Education Approves Administrative Positions

The Shelby County Board of Education has approved several new administrator positions, including principals for the Shelby County College and Career Center and New Direction, a new assistant principal at Helena Intermediate, and the district’s nurse supervisor.

Zachary McWhorter was approved as the new principal for the Shelby County College and Career Center. Mr. McWhorter has over thirteen years of experience in education and was most recently serving as the Career Tech Resource Teacher for Shelby County Schools. Prior to this, he was the Cooperative Education Coordinator and Marketing educator in the Jefferson County School System.

He received his Bachelor’s degree in Business Management from the University of Alabama, a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Jacksonville State University, a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Montevallo as well as an Educational Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is also a National Board Certified Teacher in Career Technical Education.

Michael Jones was approved as the new principal for New Direction, the district’s alternative school. Mr. Jones has eleven years of experience in education and was most recently serving as assistant principal at New Direction.

Mr. Jones obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Health and Human Performance from the University of Southern Mississippi, a Master’s degree in Collaborative Education from the University of Alabama, and a Master’s degree in Instructional Leadership and an Ed.S. in Teacher Leadership from the University of Montevallo.

Rebecca Laney was approved to be the new assistant principal at Helena Intermediate School. Ms. Laney has over ten years of experience as an educator and was most recently a teacher at Valley Intermediate School with Pelham City Schools. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Collaborative Education from Troy University and a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Jan Cibulski was named the Shelby County School District’s nurse supervisor.  She most recently had served in the position of head nurse for the district, managing 13 RNs and 20 LPNs who serve

approximately 20,000 students. Her responsibilities include assessing the health needs of the

students, providing management and leadership to the staff, individualized health care plans,

and continuing education training for staff. Ms. Cibulski has a Bachelor’s and a Master’s

degree in Nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
