Shelby County Board of Education President Nominated for All-State School Board Member

aubrey-miller-photoShelby County School’s Board of Education President Aubrey Miller has been nominated by his fellow board members for All-State School board member with the Alabama Association of School Boards. The All-State School Board Award commends up to five past or present school board members across the state who have exhibited exemplary boardmanship. Nominations are accepted in the early fall, and winners are announced during AASB’s convention in December.

Miller has served on the Shelby County Board of Education since 2010 and was recently reelected to a second six-year term in office.   He has served as president of the board since 2012.   In addition to his service with the Board of Education, Miller is also the Executive Director of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, where he has worked to rebuild donor confidence thereby increasing unrestricted giving.  In his previous role with the Baptist Health Foundation, Miller successfully led the organization from a $2.5 million deficient to a $2.7 million surplus.

To be considered for the All-State School Board award, nominees must have been a school board member for at least three years and have participated in AASB’s School Board Member Academy. Other criteria include a demonstrated commitment to AASB School Board Member Academy training activities; participation in local, AASB, state and national education activities; proven activism in legislative and/or local issues advocating for K-12 public school children; leadership in local education and related activities; support for the board’s policies and practices; and participation in community activities and/or contributions to greater public understanding and support for local schools.

Nominees must also have shown a commitment to upholding the highest ethical standards for school board members as embodied in the National School Boards Association Code of Ethics;  established positive relationships with the superintendent, fellow board members, and staff; and built rapport with local officials and leaders.
