The Shelby County Board of Education was honored at its December board meeting with a President’s Award from the Alabama Association of School Boards (AASB).

The award was presented by Renna Soles Scott, District 5 Director for the AASB and a member of the Bessemer School Board.

“I am so honored to join you today on behalf of the association to formally recognize the Shelby County School Board for earning AASB’s President’s Award for the 2018-2019 training year,” Scott said. “Out of 138 public school board in the state of Alabama, only 49 received this honor. As your District Director, I want to personally commend you for being among those 49 school boards.”

To earn the President’s Award, a board must have 60 percent or more of its members attend at least three AASB conferences and have all its members meet the state-mandated training requirements. The award recognizes school boards who as a team have demonstrated outstanding commitment to developing their leadership skills through ongoing training in the AASB School Board Member Academy.

“This time commitment deserves special recognition,” Scott told the board members. “Serving as a school board member is not without sacrifice. It involves countless hours of meetings and work sessions, as well as preparing for those meetings and work sessions. It involves maintaining strong relationships with your constituents and serving as dedicated and visible ambassadors for the school system 24/7.”

“So, I’m here today to say thank you for your efforts on behalf of the students in Shelby County schools and on behalf of this community,” Scott said. “Congratulations on your achievement as a 2019 President’s Award winner.”
