“Day of Service” and The Big Event Impact MHS in Positive Ways

Service is one of the most valiant qualities of leadership and to express this leadership quality in force almost students from Montevallo High School and the University of Montevallo recently joined together to help make MHS a cleaner and prettier campus.

About 20 students from the University of Montevallo (UM) were on hand to serve as a part of The Big Event, held April 11, which is a day of coordinated community service executed by individual students and student groups.  In conjunction with The Big Event, MHS created the Day of Service as an opportunity to partner with UM and provide more opportunities for MHS students to serve alongside the college students.

Principal Wesley Hester said the event was a huge success, with several projects initiated and/or completed on that Saturday.  Along with the college volunteers, MHS had 30 students attend and help work on the beatification projects.

“Landscaping projects were completed, with the planting of new flowers in existing beds, and the addition of new areas with flowers and plants,” said Dr. Hester. “Also, students worked together to pick up and clean the campus, clean an interior courtyard at MHS, and weed existing flower and shrub beds around the school.”

In addition to the projects on the main campus, an important project was initiated at Theron Fischer Stadium, home to MHS Football, MHS Soccer, and Montevallo Youth Football. UM students assisted MHS Athletics Director Trey Simpson with painting the exterior and interior fencing around the stadium and field, continuing the plans for updates and renovations to the facility.

“It was a great day in Montevallo, with numerous projects happening around the city,” added Dr. Hester. “We are proud of our students and thankful for the tremendous support provided by the UM students. What a connection and partnership we have, and we accomplished a great deal with almost fifty young people giving their time and energy on a Saturday morning to make Montevallo a better place for everyone.”
