Montevallo Mayor Hollie Cost honored several Montevallo students and teachers during her annual Hometown Heroes Mayor’s Breakfast on October 9.

“It is especially important to me to ensure that a wide range of our youth attends this event to promote pride in their hometown and motivate them to aspire to greater heights,” said Mayor Cost. “Last year I added educational awards as a way to recognize educational institution representatives – faculty, staff or administration – who serve our community in significant ways. I also present awards to each Student Government Association president to recognize his/her leadership efforts within their schools.”

Mayor Cost honored teachers Anita Glover from Montevallo High School, Sheila Jett from Montevallo Middle School, and Wendy Williford from Montevallo Elementary School with Excellence in Education Awards.  Also honored were SGA leaders Tamera Fletcher from Montevallo High School, Miranda Martin from Montevallo Middle School, and Hannah Locks from Montevallo Elementary School.

“The Mayor’s Hometown Heroes Breakfast was established to honor either current or former Montevallo residents for their heroism in a number of different capacities,” said Mayor Cost.  “This year I was especially thrilled to be able to recognize a special group of young ladies who put their own lives at risk by diving into the water to save three young girls from drowning in the gulf.”

Former MHS students Meredith Goggins, Lupe Serrano, Kayla Smith, and Katie Hamrick were honored as Hometown Heroes for the role they played in helping to rescue three young girls from drowning at the beach this past summer.  The four MHS graduates were on their senior trip last May 22 at Perdido Beach when they heard a mother frantically calling for help for her three daughters who were struggling nearly 40 feet out in the water.  The four girls swam out and helped bring all three girls to shore where they were then treated by paramedics.

Montevallo High School alumni Riley Duren was also honored as a Hometown Hero for his professional career at NASA studying climate change.  Also honored were former Mayor Ben McCrory and Parks Director Kirk Hamby.
