Parents of students with Dyslexia and Dyscalculia learned strategies to help their children during the Dyslexia and Donuts event held recently at the Shelby County Instructional Services Center as part of Dyslexia Awareness Month.

Jodie Parham, the district’s Instructional Coach specializing in dyslexia, led the session, which this year primarily focused on helping parents understand Dyscalculia – a specific learning disability in math characterized by difficulties understanding number-related concepts or using symbols or functions needed for success in mathematics. 

“Students with Dyscalculia have difficulty in learning or comprehending arithmetic, such as difficulty in understanding numbers, learning how to manipulate numbers, performing mathematical calculations and learning facts in mathematics. It is generally seen as the mathematical equivalent to dyslexia,” Parham explained to those in attendance at the meeting.
