HES students in Julie Britt’s class participated with the rest of the school in the Helping Animals Helena Hat Day, which raised $600 to help Two by Two Rescue.

Students at Helena Elementary School recently sprang into action to help save four puppies that were found abandoned.  Their efforts helped raise $500 to benefit Helena based Two by Two Rescue, who took the puppies in and is working to find them all forever homes.

According to school counselor Meagan Vick, the four puppies were abandoned at her mother’s house. After discussing the situation with several of her HES colleagues, Vick contacted the local non-profit animal rescue for assistance.

Sonya King, the founder of Two by Two Rescue, was more than willing to help and immediately started her search for the perfect foster home for all four puppies. Students and HES parents learned of the situation and wanted to help too.

Principal Mary Cooper allowed students to have a Helping Animals Helena Hat Day to help raiseHES 2by2rescue puppy money for the puppies’ fostering fees. The school created flyers and the teachers shared pictures of the puppies with students and explained how the fundraiser would help the animals.  The students and faculty members raised $500, enough to cover medical care and fostering needs for all four puppies, plus an extra $100 to help another animal.

“The students, parents, and HES faculty members were so invested in wanting to help animals through Two by Two Animal Rescue,” said Vick. “Many students asked their teachers if they could bring in money to help the animals, even if they didn’t want to wear a hat.”

The puppies were taken to their new foster home on January 11. Anna Heflin, who is fostering the puppies, said puppies will be micro chipped, spayed/neutered, and receive their vaccinations before going on the website for adoption in about three weeks.

Vick has shared pictures with HES students so they could see the very puppies they saved through their fundraiser. Teachers explained to students that the four puppies are going to stay together with their foster mom until adopted.

“Helena is the most giving community. We have so many families that have a heart for helping others, animals included,” said Vick. “HES faculty members and parents love that our students care about servicing the community in which they live. It is a true testament to the great community of Helena.”
