Welcome to SCORE (your reading class)

                                           Students Centered On Reading Excellence

Welcome to SCORE—your Panther Silver Team Reading Class

message to students and caretakers from Mrs. Herbert   (bherbert@shelbyed.k12.al.us)

This year we will be reading and studying an eclectic collection of written work spanning a wide genre variety from classroom textbooks, workbooks, novels, newspapers, magazines and books checked out from the media center.  We will be reading novels in class that make grown men cry, Grinches laugh out loud and stone hearted historians wonder “why?” .  We will read, draw graphs, write original literature, play games, produce films and other digital work, work in groups and speed date.

We will read in class and you will be assigned independent reading, projects and written work. It is very important that each student completes his or her independent  assignments independently with very little assistance from caretakers as the assignments are designed to enhance a student’s reading skills. In grading projects I do not grade a student’s abilities in arts and crafts as I am intensely non-artsy.  Likewise any technology product a child makes should be accomplished by the child.  Project information will be given in class at least 3 weeks in advance and posted under pages on my blog.

You will be given a weekly vocabulary and roots test.  The new words and roots will be posted in the classroom and on my blog. Reading comprehension  and selection tests are given upon completion of the material.

Test dates, assignments and project due dates will be posted well in advance on my blog and in the classroom.

You will be given a blank purple grade record sheet for my class.  You should record each test and project grade you receive onto the sheet.  Caretakers, check the sheet for your child’s grade.  Please give me at least 3 days to grade tests and 1 week for projects.

The best way to keep up with what is going on in the class is to check the blog—especially when you are absent. If you wait until you return to school it may be more difficult to catch up with 5 different core subject teachers.

Please do not hesitate to e-mail me.  I check e-mail around 7:10am, 11:10, 3pm and 6pm.  If you need me to call please include a phone number.

Your first assignment is to read both sides of this message, detach at the line and return the bottom portion signed return this signed by Monday.
