happy new year of blogs!!!

2012, 2012, 2012…

there, i’ve written it like four times today (including church) all before writing the instinctive “2011” – i’m so prod of myself – i’m ready to quit now while i’m ahead and go back to writing the double 1s…

“don quixote” by cervantes – wow, didn’t see this one coming – 1,118 pages of pure fun – at least, i told myself christmas eve that i would read it for a while – sort of a challenge book for the year – ย then, somewhere, that challenge became “must finish book before school starts” and then that turned into “must finish book before everything else in life” – so needless to say, i was glad to finish on friday – and then, sort of sad…

the book is definitely worth the reading time of an aspiring AP English kid trying to get an impressive book under the belt for the summer – the book is considered the first novel in the west – it’s the first book with a developed fictional character – and it’s certainly lighthearted enough (my favorite part being the imagery of tennis in hell – and terrible books being used as the balls)

yes, they don’t make ’em like they used to…

regardless, i’m sure the page length deters almost everyone – it deterred me until i got it on the nook and didn’t have to tote it – anyway, that’s my impressive feat for the year and i’m done

“the accidental athlete” by john bingham – the title is a misnomer b/c bingham really was an athlete – he just didn’t know it – so no accident that he got competitive later – good read about running as an adult – in a world that believes you should only do what you’re incredible at – the rest of us must spectate, this book begs to differ (i do too)

“once a runner” – maybe third or fourth time to read the book – by john l parker – i guess the last time i read the book, i was really fast – now that i’m not as fast, i guess what i appreciated was cass’s commitment to the training – to the ups and downs of it all – also, to the ending of his two buddy’s running days – it came too quick for them

okay, now time for some dvd viewing – a “boy meets world” marathon followed by “how i met your mother” – from season one to the current… yea!!!

  1. Hey gifted people. I have beenreading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. It’s Harry’s fourth year at Hogwarts and he is the unexpected fourth champion in a deadly competition. But what else is new? Has anyone noticed that Harry faces Voldemort in some form in almost every book? It must be embarrassing to be Voldemort, always failing to kill this scrawny, black haired pre-teen after almost dieing from touching him as a baby!
I really like this book because you see more of Dumbledore, and I really like his character. He’s an old man, but very powerful and wise, yet polite and still has the spirit of a child. I think J.K Rowling did a great job with him.
I really hope to finish this series!

  2. Okay, two blogs, I can do two blogs. Humph. I’ve got Samford honor band this week (along with a few other Gifteders and bloggers…). And I’m more excited now than in was for UAB because I didn’t like UAB. So Samford won the award for best honor band (so far).
So the first day back was good. I didn’t really do much honestly. *shrug*

So, I’m in-between three books. Bumped, Legend, and The Night Circus. Don’t like Bumped. I’m not even going to tell you anything about it. You have to look it up yourselves. Legend is good, I’m reading it. And then there’s the The Night Circus… It’s complicated. It’s ok. So Julie might kill me if I don’t read it so I guess I will. ๐Ÿ™ Julie
    Legend

Wed.- This book is pretty good. I like how different the characters are and their backgrounds also contrast a lot. Day is the worlds most wanted criminal, so he is always on the run, while June grew up high class and attends the most prestigious school and her brother is a military sergeant.
Thurs.- Day finds out one of his family members is sick, so he decides to break into the hospital and steal a vile of the cure. Of course, nothing goes as he plans, and he almost gets killed on the run. But now they have his
fingerprints and he ended up killing June’s brother by throwing a knife at him. So June swears revenge.

Okay, I’m done. I’m gone, gonna go practice the Saxophone.

  3. Kaitlin!!! This is infuriating… (I think I spelled that correctly) HOW COULD YOU NOT LIKE THE NIGHT CIRCUS!!!!!??
It IS PURE MAGIC TO ME AND IS PROBABLY MY FAVORITE BOOK OF ALL TIME! IT rocks! It blew my mind when I was done with it, and I didn’t understand anything that I had read, so I read it again, and again, and again. IT’s SO AMAZING!
Okay now that I’m done ranting..
I’m blogging for ten minutes today because I have Samford Honor Band tomorrow and Friday. Tomorrow afternnon we have chair tryouts, ( GOOD LUCK KAITLIN!) And Friday is some Hard Core Saxophone playing ๐Ÿ˜€

Right now, I’m reading a book called Crossed… It’s like The Hunger Games but its not. (If that makes any sense at all.)
It’s a pretty good book it’s not my favorite but it’s alright.
Crossed is the second book in the series. The first book was Matched and I finished it over Christmas break.
What it is, Is in “The Society” They control what you eat, What you wear, What you look like, Who you marry, and when you die.
    They’re Jerks.
So anyways, The main character Cassia (Yet another female lead) Is best friends with a guy named Xander. She gets matched with him and they are supposed to get married. She’s okay with that but then she meets Ky and falls in love with him… There’s a rebellion and so on…..

To be honest, I’m getting sick of reading books with a strong female lead. Girls have so many emotional problems and most of them are all jerks… KATNISS!

Okay, So I blogged for ten minutes.
    Bye.
P.S. I made it my New Year’s Resolution to get the most points in Scholar’s Bowl. I did today. I ended with 125 points.
    BOO YAH!

  4. First Blog of the year

I am still reading The Grimm Legacy by Polly Shulman but I’m almost done with this book. Right now they’re in a pneum tube sneaking into The Grimm Collection because their keys don’t work anymore thanks to the robberies. After they got shrunk they snuck into the Grimm Collection they had to find the Golden Key. Marc and Elizabeth got into Hermes flying sandels and went to find the key. After a while they found it but Elizabeth kept taking wrong turns without her sense of direction. Elizabeth and Marc flew up the shelves but Marc had to hold the sandals so Elizabeth had to find the key. She eventually found it after many wrong turns. When she saw it it was just a plain golden key. She took it back to Marc but neither wanted to let the other take it. That’s all until tomorrow.

  5. so i am reading marino mission and i like it a lot. alexa and her mom are spending the summer in central america on an island where alexa will start to work in a lab, when they first come to the center, dr. villeponce shows them the dolphins alexa’s mom will be working with. alexa was not looking forward to this summer, but after seeing the dolphins she felt much more excited, i would be too! i love dolphins ๐Ÿ™‚ sadly, alexa cant work with her mom and has to work in the labratory because alexa was not trained.

  6. Hello! I am still reading The Goblet of Fire but am nearing the end. It is my personal opinion that Voldemort has some serious self-esteem issues. But I don’t see how wizard world domination is going to help with that! Anyway, I was kind of surprised to find out that Hagrid was a half giant; although it makes sense. But I really hate Reeta Skeeter or whatever her name is. She has essteme issues too. In an alternate universe, I’d have Hermonie turn her into a frog, and, while she’s at it, turn Malfoy into an ant and squish him. Hey, brilliant idea! I would also send Voldemort, Reet, and Malfoy to esteeme classes together! ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Hey I am going to do my two blogs today.
Blog 1- So today I finally payed my fine so I can finally quit going through my library of books and rereading stuff. i picked out the book Graceling, because I have recently seen alot of kids reading it, and i was curious to read it. It starts off with a girl who is sneaking swiftly through the dark corridorrs of a dungeon. She was on a mission, and was going as fast as she could. She reached her destination to find 5 guards drinking and having fun around the cell they were supposed to be protecting. She quickly ran through and knocked each of them unconscious. She then dropped a pill in each of there mouths, and her friends Oll and Giddon came around the corner , ready to open up the cell that was holding the person they were looking for, Lienid.
    Blog 2-
So her friends show up and they tell her a quarter of an hour. I dont know what that is supposed to mean. She quickly leaves and now all the guards are alerted that she is coming for them, because they now have realized that the guards have gone missing. She quickly goes to the castle and takes out each of the five guards with just her fists and legs. And then the main castle guard comes out and talks about how he knows who HE is. That HE is a Graceling, a person who is kind of like a bounty hunter who works alone and is gifted with the talent of the deadly arts. The funny thing is, is that he thinks she is a boy when she is really a girl. So when he wakes up from being unconcious then he will tell everyone that is was a boy Graceling which helps cover up who she is sinifigantly.

  8. School is back so two blogs.!
    Monday- Authors Purpose
I am reading the book Fake ID and I think the authors purpose is to entertain. He tells a story of a very strange family. Mom doesn’t like music and the daughter is secretly talented at guitar. The dad is no where to be found. Well, at the daughter;s birthday party she gets a very expensive guitar from her friend. Lets just say things didn’t go so well. No they have no idea where her mom is so she is staying with her friend Ben. Well, staying until Friday. A real mean lady is taking her to a foster home. they only suspect trouble from her family. Well, they are so wrong…
    Tuesday-Creative
Well, I hope we all had a good Christmas break and all enjoyed it! Now we are all back in school, ughh not very happy! Well, except you Mr. Mayfield. You rock… just don’t tell the other teachers. ๐Ÿ™‚ I want to do a creative on how school has changed. At the beginning of the year we all were scared (not me ) and definitely not ourself. Now we all are hanging out and making friends. After new year it got a lot better and I have a good feeling about the rest of the year. Just wanted to tell you a little bit about my experience so far! ๐Ÿ™‚
    Mimi!:)

  9. First one: I want to blog about Flowers of Algernon. I think Charlie’s character is one of the best characters I have read about in a while because he has zero potential however he tries extremely hard to become something he can’t without this “operashun”. So, he finds where he can learn and is determined to get as far as he can and is eventually accepted to the operation which slowly makes his mind repaired. The speed of the repair seems to frustrate Charlie because he wants to learn so bad he wants his mind at full potential immediately!

  10. Okay first and second blog of the year. I’m so excited! Okay so maybe not because writing just comes naturally.

  11. I’m reading Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It’s pretty good. So far i’ve
read..wel i don’t know. My kindle says 15%. Well, so far ive gotten to
the part where Jonathan just now gets to run away. because he hits Dracula in the head with a shovel. Now Mina and Lucy are passing notes. Lucy meets a …how do you say it a hunk.I cant wait till it talks more about Dracula. Today in Mafelds class we learned about footnotes mine was really funny i really enjoyed that activity’. Now back to Dracula
I hate that it didnt continue to see if dracula chased him down or something. i want to kep reading some more but with the letters its really boring There should be a sign or something when it notices your not reading as fast that says “Hang in there baby” but im going to go past the letters and it will probably talk more about Dracula Well there isn’t much more to talk about

  12. Second: I have read an article about a stolen car that I thought you might find funny. In Fresno, California, 26 year old man stole a car in his boxers. While driving quickly away he hit an elevation in the road that sent the car on the roof of a nearby residence. Authorities later arrested the man and calmed down the two startled residents of the house and residents of the neighborhood.

  13. Second, and last, blog of the week

I am doing a creative writing today. Jeffrey was a 31-year-old man that lived in his parents’ basement. He didn’t have a girlfriend and his job was an accountant at a cat food distribution company. One day he got the oppurtunity of a lifetime. He got offered a new job as the bat-boy/equiptment manager for the Texas Rangers, his favorite team. He took the offer after he talked to his mom. When he got to the stadium on his first day, he asked the person training him why they chose him, a 31-year-old man that still lives in his parents’ basement. Heanswered me by saying something like ,”We looked for a fan that was wearing alot of Rangers stuff. Then we looked for someone that was paying attention to the dugouts and the people that weren’t players but were in the dugouts. Thwn we looked for people that are in shape.” That’s all until Monday.

  14. Hey mr mayfield I’m doing 10 minutes on my samsung tablet

Weds-this week I have mostly read the gaming article that you gave me. I was expecting a whole lot lot of boring mumbojumbo but what I actually found was some interesting facts on the gaming industry.some of the facts I already knew because I do my research before I buy a game (if u know what I mean).i haven’t finished the article but I’m looking forward to the rest.

Thurs-i also have started a book that wont take me long to read. It is diary of a wimpy kid: the cold truth.it is about greg hefley hitting puberty and all that stuff.the worst part is that he is having to go thru it all by himself.his friend rowley is having a fight with him so they are currently not friends.this is an interesting book and I can’t wait to finnish it

  15. Song of today is Bulls on Parade by Rage against the Machine. left off with winston recuperating from a catapult blow to the head. he walks back to his apartment and sits down in his aclove. he recalls a dream of a man whom he believes is O’Brien (a coworker) saying that they will meet in the place where there is no darkness. he also notes that thoughtcrime makes him a dead man. winston puts the diary up and climbs into bed. he has a dream of his mother and feels strangely responsible for his mother’s disappearance in a political purge around twenty years ago. he is awoken all too soon by an alarm signaling the Physical Jerks, a mandatory exercise. during the Jerks, he thinks about how the party controls the past, present, and future. for example, oceania (his home area) was at war with eurasia and in alliance with eastasia, as it had been forever. Winston could remember being at war with eastasia very recently. Big Brother appeared in the 60s, but the history books say he was around in the 30s. during these thoughts, the telescreen warns him to try harder to touch his toes, which he does without bending his knees for the first time in over 30 years. after the Jerks, winston percives a sense of paranoia at his work, jumping from believing that he will be caught to having hope for the future generations. he concentrates on his work, obliterating the false documents speaking against big brother. most of the time, this only needs a little doctoring, as in changing a statement of more than needed quotas to predictions that the commidity will have a shortage. that’s two journals, see ya next week!

  16. hey mr mayfeild ill blog for ten minutes on creative writing. One day i was walking home then i saw a coyote and o knew it was eating my cows so i went out to shoot it and it ran into the woods so i was confident to kill it i chased it down. i found its layer i crawled in and there was a giant layer with thousands of coyotes in there. i went out and never went back. so i told all my friends about it and they all came over to kill them they went out and never came back. i was worried so i got animal control to come now thats it for today bye

  17. Wednesday

This week Iโ€™m blogging about The Castaways of the Flying Dutchman. It is by Brian Jaques, the author of the Redwall series. Anywho, I know that he wrote this to entertain the reader. I pretty sure anyways. I think he wrote this to entertain, but he used facts about the countries and myths of the Flying Dutchman to an advantage, because he twists it to a new point of view of a never-before-heard-of-character. At the same time though he creates the image a huge ship where the boy is put in the galley.

    Thursday

Wondering what would have happened if Neb would have escaped in Denmark?
My guess is that he would have found the black lab and went to a bench and hid until the pirates were gone. Then he would have made a home and been one of those beggars who sits on the corner of the block in New York. Or maybe if he didnโ€™t like the dog anymore โ€ฆ sell the poor black lab. I mean thatโ€™s what I would have to do if I were him, but Iโ€™m not so that is all his discision. That is what I think would have happened to Neb if he escaped the ship in Denmark.

  18. Mr Mayfield, it recently occurred to me that even though I am no longer in middle school I still wish I was, high school just seems like a daze, but anyways I thought I would share a contest that closes on the 30th for you to win another Mac for your classroom and I would like to thank you for helping me out and even though I gave you a tough time you continued to help. Sure My grades are improved but if I could go back and change one thing it would be not doing my journals. Anyways… Here is the link to the contest:
    http://www.instructables.com/contest/teacher
I really and truly miss you Mayfield!
