so last week was a blast – managed to survive a 17-mile run this morning in about 95 percent humidity:)
you’ll notice reading is way down – still reading sports illustrated, runner’s world, and the like – but with media days last week, I read some of the football media guides – which i’m not counting – unless I lose to annMarie on the book count
“the poverty of nations” – great book for the middle school classroom – particularly my gifted one – because it’s an understandable (to the reader) look at what makes nations better off – and what some nations in poverty can do to raise their standard of living – the fact that the authors included a defense of their Christian faith made it all the better for me – but again, it’s definitely something my students could follow and I thought that was outstanding for an economist and a theologian
okay, so has the countdown for summer begun yet? that’s hard to do with days like today – although, I wish summer would go away… 🙂
maf
First!!!!
I’m in marching band!!!!! If I already mentioned this, then, oh well.
New record, first in 3 different time zones (atlanta, columbiana, colorado springs
yes, that time zone in colorado is way different that the time in columbiana – we go on “slow” time:)
It still is a record for posting in 3 different timezones in one summer, right?
oh yeah – you’ve set the record for most posts as well – even if you haven’t read a book at all this summer:)
fun vandy fact (I’ve read through their media guide since last post) – they’re one of the few schools to post the dates for nearly all their games – so you know when they played early football – and they used to OPEN the season on thanksgiving – sorta late…
You guys miss me??
I spoiled 80 days for fred, remember. I’ve also read shakespeare secret, a person that we let borrow stargirl last year lost it and faryn lost crash (which would be a repeat)
queen – no, never, never ever (particularly if you’re ahead of me in the great book race:)
fun vandy fact of the day – it’s common now, according to the media guide, for fans to say “anchor down!!!” billy, help explain???
Before every game 2 players for vandy bring out an anchor on to the field. I dont know anything else
I’ve read quite a few books too Billy- 7- what a coincidence.
Band camp- finally- some challenge in band. Sixth grade band was WAY too easy for me. Marching band is so much fun now that I get to do stuff as advanced as the stuff I do for Dr. Ardovino, the band director at the University of Montevallo who just so happens to be my teacher is trumpet playing.
Also, I’ve read a number of books since we last met, and if I’m not mistaken, I’ve read three, plus some more of Around the World in 80 Days.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets- amazing- even the fifth time reading it was enjoyable, but then again- the whole series is a page turner. I keep noticing more and more, and since the last time I read it was in fifth grade, I didn’t have such a keen reading sense then, where I couldn’t identify literary features that are so brilliant then, and now, it’s like reading a whole new book. Again, great book, highly recommend.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban- read this in 14 hours- did the math- read 255 pages in three hours, and spent the remaining 11 reading much more slowly, since I was multi-tasking, which doesn’t help when trying to read a book fast.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire- JUST finished, like five minutes ago- amazing, the second best in my opinion out of the seven, with the last in the lead. This one shows, without counting the increased length of the books compared to the previous ones, that Harry has left childhood and has entered a more dangerous world where there are no second chances, and in the end, Lord Voldemort is returned to full power, and as the books go on, they increase in length, except Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which loses about 230 pages compared to the one before it. (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix)
I think that rounds up to about 15 minutes. Maybe tomorrow I can finish up for this week. Band camp has really taken free time away from me. I can’t develop my playground or swimming skills anymore 🙂
Fred
fred – i apologize for the sun today – with the endless days of clouds and humidity, i prayed all day yesterday for sun – and boy, it was out there and hot this morning at 10 – hope you didn’t die from standing:)
fun vandy fact – they’re one of two 20-20-20 schools – top 20 in all-around university or college, top 20 finish in college football last year – and top 20 recruiting class for this year – i think they invented that club – anyway, care to guess who the other school is???
Ouch, i’ve officially wished my dad had let me march. Also, finished my nanowrimo.if you can’t see right through this book after the first chapter with a question mark on it (a) you are fired and (b) i’d be shocked
Just remembered it was coach childers
I FINISHED AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS YESTERDAY!!! Now I have officially finished all my summer reading books. And Mr. Maf I am very ashamed to say, but I haven’t read ANY other books this summer other than the 4 summer reading books. I was going to read the second book of “The Gifted” series, but Anna Kathryn Davis hasn’t finished writing it yet.
(Totally unrelated)Even if you’re only going to be at the registration for the 6th grade I’ll be there, so you’ll get to see me (I get to sit at the table that you sign up for my (not really “my”) dance team!!
queen – sadly, I’m in alabaster most of next week – several days training on the new textbooks we’ll get for class – so, sigh:( I don’t get to see your happy face at registration – i’m bummed
on the good news front, all the county teachers have a writing plan thanks to my work:)
hey, four books is still good – I mean, I read that in a week, but for “average” kids like yourself, that’s pretty good… 🙂
as always, good to hear from you
billy, awesome news on the book – am I guessing that you’re passing on the trivia???
Sure, i’m guessing cincinatti because i can’t think of anything else
Stanford:)
Oh yeah, they had a decent team last year.
decent, hey, some of the guys on espn have them no. 2 this fall
fun Kentucky fact – they had the sixth highest spring game attendance this year – i’m thinking their fans got confused and thought a basketball game was going on…
Wow I didn’t even know if you was blogging over the summer. I just went on the blog because I was at a very boring part in the book I was reading. Wow. Okay then. Fred, you’re like the only person that is actually blogging (I promise I’m not saying that in a mean way) but just thought you should know. Hope you are having an awesome summer maf and I’m so happy that I will have you as a teacher next year (yay). I’m reading tommyknockers by Stephen king so I’m gonna go read. Bye!!!!!!
Never mind Fred. I started reading all the other posts sorry
I’m bored Mr Mayfield if you don’t have a book and your bored out of your mind what would you do? Please help me!!
