Shane Dees, a junior at Pelham High School, won Best of Grade (11th) and an honorable mention in the photography category at theĀ Second Annual Statewide High School Juried Art Exhibition.Ā

His photo,Ā entitled ā€œMoss Chasmā€ will be displayed at the Shelby County Arts Council Gallery from November 3 through December 1.Ā His artwork will then be displayed with the other show winners from January 13-29, 2014Ā at the Sella-Granata Gallery at the University of Alabama.Ā

Ā The exhibit was a partnership between the Shelby County Arts Council and the University of Alabama.

Juror, Pete Schulte of the University of Alabama, wrote in his statement: ā€œā€¦Ā It is important for us to remember that being an ā€˜artistā€™ is but one outcome of an education that includes the arts, and that thinking creatively and critically about problems and acting to solve those problems ā€“ the by-products of creative training– are skills that translate across the spectrum of human experience, skills that are flexible and can evolve. It is proven that those who are trained in, and acquire these skills early in life tend to succeed regardless of the career path(s) they choose to follow.ā€
