OMIS Inferencing Activities with SRO

In an effort to make reading strategies come alive, students in Myra Watson’s, Jenny Wood’s, Melinda Roddy’s, and Michelle Tindal’s classrooms at Oak Mountain Intermediate School participated in a culminating inferencing activity. After completing multiple inferencing lessons aligned with the Common Core, the teachers worked with school resource officer, Deputy Mel Janousek, to create an artificial crime scene in the classroom complete with evidence markers, caution tape, and fingerprint dust. Students were instructed to infer through visual clues, such as fingerprints and background knowledge about who committed the crime. Deputy Mel assisted the students and discussed with them the importance of using inferencing in his job. The students were engaged throughout the day collecting clues and documenting evidence to form their inferences, and were given the opportunity to see how inferencing skills are used in the real world.
