Vincent Middle High Students Learn Poetry Tips from Birmingham Poet

VMHS Skype with Irene   VMHS Skype questions 2   VMHS students skyping

A class of English students at Vincent Middle High School recently had the unique opportunity to work with Birmingham writer, Irene Latham.  Students began the challenging project by reading poetry from Irene’s very first published book of poems, What Came Before.  During that time, students learned to identify various literary techniques used by Mrs. Latham in her free verse poetry.

The students later participated in a Skype session in the library media center where Mrs. Latham spoke to them about her process for writing poetry.  She also gave them tips on how they can become better writers.

Students finished the project by creating their own poetry using what they had learned.  The poems were emailed to Mrs. Latham, who generously offered to provide feedback to the budding young poets.
