Victor Cuicahua, who serves as the Hispanic Outreach Intern for the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, will be the guest speaker at a special presentation for English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) students at Montevallo High School. The presentation will be held November 12 at 1:00 p.m.
Cuicahua, a graduate of Pelham High School, became a recognized face and voice during the rallies, forums and marches protesting Alabama’s immigration law, HB 56. He gained national prominence when he appeared on the cover of Time magazine in June 2012 with Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas in conjunction with a cover story about undocumented immigrants living in the United States.
Cuicahua is a community organizer, college student and aspiring history teacher. He serves with the Immigrant Youth Leadership Initiative of Alabama and is a Steering Committee member with the Alabama Coalition for Immigrant Justice. He was born in Mexico City, but has lived in Alabama since he was a small child. He is currently attending the University of Alabama.
