A group of students at Oak Mountain High School recently celebrated becoming certified as Microsoft Office Specialists in MOS Word.  The students are participating in the Information Technology (IT) Academy offered at OMHS through the Advanced Business Technology Applications (BTA) course.

Oak Mountain High School was part of a pilot program that was started two years ago and is currently the only school in the county that is a Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) test center where students receive their MOS credential.  The course is taught by Jodie Temple.

“Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification is the leading IT certification in the world. It demonstrate you have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to productively use Microsoft Office,” said Julie Godfrey, School to Career Resource Specialist for the Shelby County School District. “These students have received their MOS Word credential and are currently working on their MOS Excel credential.”

The students were treated to a pizza party by Buffy Murphy, BancorpSouth Bank, North Central Alabama, Assistant Vice President/ CRA & Compliance Officer. Murphy also works with the JumpStart Coalition, where she works with the Shelby County School District to provide financial literacy in the classroom.

“She’s a great asset and always willing to help out in our schools,” said Godfrey. “Her company graciously provided a pizza party to recognize these students efforts and accomplishments.”

Godfrey is currently assisting Helena High School, Vincent High School and Chelsea High School in becoming testing centers so that they are able to offer this credential to their students.
